iPhone: Hit or Hype?

Over the weekend, I witnessed a massive, terrifying frenzy in the streets of New York. I was walking aimlessly (in that happily sated, post-brunch way) when I rounded a corner and was faced with an epic crowd, teeming with anxiety and excitement. It was startling, even by New York standards. “What was going on?” I wondered. Then it dawned on me—I had unwittingly wandered too close to an Apple Store, deep in the throes of iPhone 3G mania.
How can such a little device (basically just a tool to make getting through the day a little easier and more convenient) inspire such adoration and devotion from its users? Make no mistake, I’m an acolyte myself, but I’m honestly a bit disturbed by how attached I’ve become to my own iPhone. I heard a story not too long ago about a girl who was almost hit by a subway car. She had dropped her iPhone on the tracks and jumped down in front of an oncoming train in order to save it, barely getting out of the way in time.
Apocryphal or not, that story resonated with me. Is an iPhone worth it? Would I jump in front of a train to save mine? I’d probably consider it for a moment, before getting hold of myself and thinking better of it. It’s that moment of consideration, however, that I find unnerving.
I’ve never felt this way about a phone before, and as much as I loved my old third-gen iPod, I’d never consider risking my life for it. So what makes the iPhone different? Maybe it’s because it’s filled with so many personal associations: pictures of family and friends, all my favorite music and videos, private notes, birthdays, phone numbers, and addresses. Not only that, it’s always with me. Maybe it’s become a digital extension of myself—an extra brain.
Or maybe Apple is just a megalomaniacal corporation hell-bent on taking over the world, and the iPhone is just one part of their evil conspiracy to brainwash the masses and control the planet. Who knows?
What do you think? Is the iPhone really worth all the hype, or has Apple got us all iProgrammed?

I’m commenting on this on my iPhone at the dentists office while litsening to my music! The iPhone rocks!!
LOL Richard S!!!
Great blog. I am looking forward to buying the 3G iphone as well. The person who almost gave away her life to save her iphone was insane. But you made a great point: maybe she had sensitive information stored on her iphone.
Well, I’d say iphone got us all iprogrammed
Dad
I never liked Apple products. Not because they are bad quality, but coz they are overpriced and their Fanboys suck.
iPhone may be cool and all but there are better phones in the market at lower cost.
Just in case you like reading rants:

Hit, the new iphone is off the hook!
Since the time I started using desktop computers, in 1980, my opinion of Apple products was that they had less performance than similar products, and cost (often a LOT) more.
The latest iPhone still hasn’t changed my view.
i dont think theyd want to save it so much for the device itself, its probably for the price paid. Buying another one would be pretty pricey. I have an htc touch and love it as well but wouldnt jump in front of a train for it lol.
Yep, I have the iPod Touch (the iPhone without the phone) and I think it is one of the best electronics I’ve ever boughten. I can see why people would risk their lives for it is because it has real internet you see on your own computer (high speed) very high quality pictures and camera, it’s easier to use than its competitors (I’ve looked at the Voyager and the Dare and there’s file everywhere you have to open and not as jumpy as the iPhone) outstanding graphics, slick lean design, Google Maps/Earth, easy to download movies, music videos, actually has iTunes on it so you can buy a song, video, or podcast with your iPhone, email, text, IM, Youtube, Stocks, Weather, Calculator, Notes, Calendar, Contacts, Clock, and more. I just read all down the list of the features I saw.
Yesterday I was waiting for the Metro (at the edge of the platform) when I dropped my iPhone. In the seconds it took to leave my hand and it the ground I swear my heart stopped beating. Luckily it didn’t land on the track. But as I was picking it up, hand shaking, I remember thinking “what if?” I too wouldn’t have gone after it, but I think I would have gone into a state of mourning for its loss. I guess I’ve been iProgrammed.
With constant news about a crumbling economy and sad stories about people sacrificing food for gas, it surprises me that so many people are willing to rush out to buy the next expensive iGadget.
“How can such a little device … inspire such adoration and devotion from its users?”
I can only describe that as the “Mac mentality”. You can always tell the difference between a Mac aficionado and a PC user. Generally, Mac lovers will have an incredible desire to cherish all that is Apple along with perpetuating an underlying angst against all that is PC.
My husband was one of them people in line(not in New York) & the AT&T store sold out -we had to order our new Iphone on-line! I love Apple- we both have a laptops & Iphones! There is nothing both than Apple!
i say they got us iProgrammed. i just love ur comment on that being a consperiecy. big brother 10 is on so thats another consperiecy in the making….cameras everywhere?….watching us?….lol have a good day ; )
OMG, i just wrote this entire huge comment and hit send and it got swallowed by the internet “God”… that really hurts.
i’m not writing that again!
I just want to know how high your credit score has to be in order to not get charged a deposit. I have excellent credit (never late) but just have very little of it (young person). Then I’ll buy one !
LG Dare??
Are you kidding me, its unnerving to to consider jumping in front of a train because you have been brainwashed. In terms of open software all of Apples products take the cake at being the worst of the bunch. While users are given the choice to either be chained to iTunes are Void their warranties I will stick to Creative and Nokia.
Just to put things into perspective.
iPod shuffle dock/charger 28.97US
Standard USB mini cable 9.99USD
8GB Nano 197.93USD
16GB Creative Zen 179.99
Keep trying Apple you haven’t tricked us all yet.
I think its a gerational that that have us programed.
Agree with you on that. Apple products were traditionally over-priced (some of them still are), but the new iPhone prices are inspiring. I think risking your life for a electronic device is a no-no, but a little attachment to your little aluminium box couldn’t hurt, right?
Apple rocks! I’m typing this on my Macbook as I speak. iPods, iPhones, Laptops… technology! Apple has got it. Rock on, Apple, rock on
I’ve been iProgrammed sadly. I love my iPhone (not enough to jump in front of a train) but I do love it. I’m not planning on buying the new one though because honestly I don’t see the major difference. My iphone does all the things the new one does. So, why spend so much money to buy a new one….
But yes, I’ve gone through 4 iPods. I can’t live without it… And I recently got a Imac book computer…
I waited in line for the iPhone 3G in Jackson, MS, Friday morning….It was well worth it!
I’m going to college and the fall and the way it syncs with my mac, that I bought to run my online photo business (which it did perfectly), will keep me organized in the weeks and months to come!
If you considering getting one, do it. It’s definitely a HIT.
wow that is so true!
i cant believe that that girl would almost DIE for her iphone? people do crazy things to save something so unimportant.. & how about that 3G? its amazing.. that people stand in line & even sleep in front of the store to get it first. wow.
i peisonaly dont own an iphone, i think mine which is a motorola is just fine and serves my puposes. however i don”t have aything against iphones, its just that i can think of more worhty things to spend that kind of money on. i know theres peoople who have owned several iphones but complain about no money for other things. i guess to each its own. but i do think that society on the whole is starting to relate personal value to how much of the latest gadgets they have and how big thier dvd collection is etc.my opion.Scary!
I’ve heard the Voyager from LG and the Instinct from Samsung were rated better in quality and performance from cnet, and also had more features. But LG and Samsung are Korean and the iphone is American…
Sorry, but I don’t feel like shelling out THAT kind of cash if I’m forced to buy the most expensive service plan in the ENTIRE WORLD!!!
Even with the $30 discount they are currently offering (and ONLY on a 3 year contract – ALSO the longest worldwide!!!) – the iPhone rates here in Canada are the 2nd highest globally. By the end of August (when the deal runs out) – we will be (by FAR) the most ripped off.
Apple products are GOOD – but they are nowhere CLOSE to what they should be for that price. Take the Macbook Air for example – it’s NOT 3x better than a DELL laptop (despite being 3x as expensive).
I suppose if you’ve got the cash to dish out – you might as well get the flashiest new toy. But if you’re strapped for cash like the rest of us – then you DEFINITELY want to get something that provides a much better Value for your hard earned bucks
;);)
I bought the iphone, I like the touch screen lol very high tech, but its missing some really REALLY great features, like video audio recording, flash light….umm that’s what on my mind at the moment. I also like the SMS waaaay easier that each contact has its own chatting window, however I was asked to delete some even though I didn’t feel like it was FULL!!!!
I’d love to hav an iPhone but I’d have to spend ALL my money to get it. Apple definetly brainwashes, and that girl is an example of how bad it can get. I still love apple though!

The Blackberry can still run circles around the iPhone. God forbid you have big fingers, hence-forth, no iPhone.
I honestly, honestly don’t think an iPhone is worth it. It might be super duper awesome, but that girl that jumped in front of that train is a maniac! I would never risk losing my life over a phone. No matter how awesome it is! People need to chill out and calm down!! LOL.
I don’t see what’s so great about iPhones… And I certainly would never jump in front of a train for one!
The iPihone is just a phone, just another phone. It’s another way to keep us plugged in constantly, obsessing over things we don’t need and have done without since the beginning of time.
Cell phones are a recent invention, and the amout of obsession I’ve seen regarding them in the last ten years truly scares me. Kids in schools can’t go ten minutes without flipping one open and texting someone, in class or out, and it’s pathetic. People freak out when they forget or don’t charge their phone.
It’s sad. What happened to the days where you could go out and have a good time without worrying about phones every ten minues? I mean, it wouldn’t be the end of the world, you’d get home and have a message to listen to. But it’s just pathetic people need phones so badly at all.
The “digital age” is regarded as one of great progress, but I believe in many ways it has only made us dependent on “conveniences” that have stolen our time and creative capacity. When was the last time you rode a bicycle just for fun, or read a classic book?
Turn off your phone or iPod for a weekend, just one weekend, that’s all I ask. Your messages will be there on Monday, and I promise you’ll feel like life was a little bit fuller.
on saturday Iwent to the apple store and it was a line like that one…I was the last one but I din’t even care..
Its understandable.
Apple actually does get an emotional hold on you.
I still have my first iPod, even though it doesn’t work. I just can’t get myself to get rid of it. I had kept my first computer until my brother (Without my permission) took it apart and my mother took the pieces to school.
Its understandable how someone could say “its just a phone”, but the truth is, when you really like something, an emotional attachment can form. (I wouldn’t personally jump in front of a train, but I would be depressed for a week (maybe more) because it was crushed).
I love my phone now (Which isn’t an iPhone) and I am dreading the day that it dies because its become part of me. I’ve had it for three years now and it still works great. Albeit, the battery is a little weak, but nothing a good night of charging wont fix.
Got off point…Apple doesn’t have us all “iProgrammed,” People think its a totally awesome thing (which it is) and some have a much more….obsessive….connection with theirs than others.
Well, apple stuff is quite addictive, I must admit. It is a little scary that I am so much more attached to my iPod than I was my first MP3 player, (a crappy lyra) but it is understandable as well. This stuff is beautiful. It’s small. It goes where you go, holding your digital life as you go about your day, living it in the real world.
To answer Nick’s question: I read a classic book yesterday. I rode a bike three days ago. And as for creative capacity, i’m almost done with a novel I’m writing and I used a computer as my word processor. Technology isn’t suppressing people, its opening them up to new things. If you know how to use things in the right way, progress is definitely a positive. You can do more than one thing at once. An iPod isnt evil because it’s technology. Nor is a cell phone. Its when we hide from the world behind these things that they seem sinister. Just because someone’s listening to music, it dosent mean they arent aware of the world around them. I would argue that it makes people more aware.
ipones are for people too lazy to carry an ipod and a mobile phone in my opionon
Now I can’t speak for everyone. I’ve lived my life with a deep sense of melancholy for so long that I’m sure I’ve gone way to deep into my own ass and I have no idea what the rest of the world is like anymore.
And maybe it’s because of my attitude that I say this but,
I just can’t bring myself to become excited about technology. Of any kind. While I use a computer, it really couldn’t matter to me less what kind it is, or how much memory it has as long as it’s able to play the Sims without crashing.
I’ve only had one cell phone in my life, and was irresponsible with it and lost it. I ended up just terminating the service because well… I just couldn’t care less about the damn thing.
So when my husband starts drooling and barking like a dog over the new iPhone commercials, I can’t do anything but roll my eyes and say,
“It’s just a phone, gosh!”
And he looks at me in disgust, probably wondering how I could speak such blasphemy, and presses the “rewind” button on our HD DVR (that he insisted on having) to watch the commercial again.
But as for me… I just don’t see what the big deal is…
I’m not sure what’s more popular standing in line for iPhone or Indy Mac at this point. Both seems to have big draws these days. I wonder if it’s more invigorating to rip your life savings form the grasp of the US government at .50 on the dollar or purchasing your new $199 second Gen iPhone. I think it’s a close race…
I’m not sure why consumers feel it necessary to stand, sit, sleep or camp out in line. I guess being first, winning the race to the door is a primal desire in life. If you can’t be the biggest, strongest, fastest, or wealthiest at least you can be the first of your clan to grab the new whatchma jiggy from Apple.
Yippe! It’s good to be number 1…
I’m happy to order my phone and wait for delivery. It’s been 5 days, 4 hours, 32 minutes and 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50 seconds… since I ordered mine.
KK
You people are crazy risking your life for a phone i am only 19 (i say this because what i say next will make me sound old) but i think life was way better back when there was no such things as cell phones it is ridiculous that people are so concernd with techno crap that they have lost their basic survial skills we rely on them way to much and what happens if something happens and we no longer have any technology millions will perish because they don’t so much as know how ot start a fire without a lighter or catch/grow their food people should be less concernd about something as stupid as an Iphone nad spend a little more time learning the lessons of life or you will be lost when there is no such things as cell phones anymore. have you people heard of a progress trap come on if you find yourslef NEEDING this stuff take a deep breath and think of what you really need gread will otimitly be the downfall of our civilization it has been the downfall of everyother civilization since the beggining of time.i knowi sound like a crazy but im not im just a normal person who see that everyone else is crazy. take a moment and try and think what would you do and how would you survive without your Iphone!
My husband got me my first iPhone, an 8 GB one last November for my birthday. I was so thrilled! I used it for maybe 3 months then it fell to the floor inside my backpack, noooooo! So I called into apple all distraught and stupidly explained I had dropped my baby! (yes, my baby shush). So, I got charged almost 300 dollars for accidental coverage and rental fee. So I paid it, I didn’t even blink. Just adding to my every growing credit card drama. But I got a new iPhone to replace my first one. Now the 3G is out, oh mah GAH! I have to get one in 16 GB only because I have 2.2 GB left on my iPhone to put pictures and music etc. And all these new applications, some free some cheap some not so cheap but useful and others not so useful. Anyway, yeah, it’s a bunch of hype and maybe Apple is trying to brain wash us but, ahhh, how beautiful it is to click on the safari button and click you’re connected to the web. And how many of us can sit there and lie about not being addicted to the web? Not many. Love the Hype Love the Hit. Hate the AT&T carrier’s monthly $117.00 bill, but oh well, we’ll see if I can get shockwave player on this thing and play on pogo otherwise I’m getting some other phone with a cheaper carrier. Love it but I owe I owe!
Apple is very good at what it does, but its products are majorly overhyped. Apple has so many people eating of its hand, its downright silly.
Here’s an ipod. Oooo. Here’s an upgraded ipod. Ahhh. Here’s an even better ipod. Ohhhh. Between every new product and every upgrade, people discard their old versions and shell out even more cash. It’s extremely environmentally wasteful and pretty hypocritical for a company that touts to be so progressive.
okay iphones r cool in all but not worth ur life!!! i have an ipod that just broke and i was a little mad, but i know i can get it fixed. I wonder wat happened 2 sanity i mean people would kill other people for a stupid little thing that u DONT REALLY NEED!!! so yah it’s k 2 have one just dont get obessed about it!
I fell your pain. Apple knows us like a mother knows a child. That’s why we buy from applee and why Microsoft can’t get it.
I think ther blah before you know it ther’s gonna b a new hot thing out and ther you go running…. but if you really wanna know more about the iphones go to youtube ther’s alot of video’s of them good & bad……
Blunty i really could care less
I have verizon and they work everywhere i go
AT&T will only work in some places….
Iphone is great and you can read a classic book on it. I have one.
Yes, it’s really interesting. I do not own an iPhone but I feel a strong attachment to my iPod nano. In a way, it’s ridiculous. When I read your story about the girl jumping in front of train tracks to save the iPhone, almost getting hit– I thought to myself “that’s really, really sad.” An electronic device is not even a human or a friend –it isn’t worth risking one’s life, and yet so many would. Even I might, I’m not sure (for my iPod). I feel the same about my laptop, even my cell. Like you said, it’s like this personal digital extension of ourselves. But somehow, it’s just creepy when you stop and think about it.
And in other news, we had a line like that one you showed, here in Kansas City on the plaza outside the Apple store. I heard a girl say she’d been in line for that phone for 5 hours and ..wow
Its just a hype! The hype for the first iphone was just about the same and the sales were horrible. MAny ppl complained about the phone which is why they came out with version 2!
Its actually laughable. People say apple knows them…
so all people wanted in a new iphone was 3g data and gps? what about mms, a better bluetooth support, voice dialing, haptic feedback, flash player, JAVA, better battery life, user replaceable battery, decent call quality?
Apple has a history of doing what its doing.. minuscule advancements (which apparently pushes their R&D team past its limits) and sells it as an all new device.. the iphone 3g is an utter joke
This only makes me remember the article on cell phones that I read at nosle.
read this
http://www.nosle.com/loc/gth/nsl_rss.jsp?href=null&a2=1213192733&title=Ear+Damage+-+Cell+Phone+Culture
I really cannot understand the ego trip those that have ANY cell phone have, much less the iPhone.
And yeah, the iPhone has some cool features, however, one drop and it’s toast.
Also, the screen…unless you buy many protectors, it will get scratched.
My cell phone is for emergencies only. If I am on it and am approached by someone, I terminate my call.
Courtesy is too far gone with the cell phone.
HYPE!
“Maybe it’s become a digital extension of myself — an extra brain.”
For more on this, check out Marshall McLuhan, who wrote extensively about technologies functioning as extensions of ourselves, as well as other topics.
When people really want something, they’ll go get it. It’s not only for iphones people go crazy for. It can be for the new pair of Jordan’s coming out, tickets to a sports event or concert, a new movie coming out (Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, etc.), game consoles (PS3), Black Friday Sales, etc. So people have their reasons why they stand in line for hours or overnight and most of the time these things are limited so they would have to line up for it to get it first. Some just want to make money off people who don’t want to wait, so they sell them on eBay.
hype. just plain ol’ hype. i’m not a fanboy of anything, i just like good pieces of tech. i give apple their propz for making the touchscreen of their iphone so easy and unique and intuitive. but sorry to burst your bubble apple, but, i’ve had my nokia n95 for almost a year now and it has all the features your iPhone 3g is bragging about, and even more.
This is just sad. People freely say they “love” a device. “The things you own, end up owning you.” We like to think we are free but we are slaves to material objects to define who we are. We think we are unique and individual. Its really a hollow existence where we use objects outside of ourselves to identify ourselves. Well, insecurity breeds that. The advertisers know this and exploit it and we fall for it. They got us just like Pavlov’s dog. Well, at least Apple does. Until the next fad comes up.
Not worth it. It’s just like have a new pair of shoes that after a few days you will lose your excitement. Plus, having it with AT&T will just make your pain even worse. AT&T has an inferior network quality compared to T-Mobile. AT&T promises good coverage while T-Mobile proves it.
I think it’s a little childish for people to become so attached to a digital device that they’d even CONSIDER risking their life for it. I think it’s ridiculous that we’ve become so dependent on these things, these things with no brains, no feelings, that we would go to such crazy lengths. I don’t have an iPhone, but I do have an 80 gb iPod video… and I know I wouldn’t jump in front of a moving train to save it if I dropped it. Hell, if I drop it, I don’t even think oops. It’s not a human life, it IS replaceable! If my cat jumped in front of a moving train, yes, I would follow him to save him, same as if it were my father… but a phone???
Humanity needs to step back and look at our priorities for a second. I think that in stead of using a complicated little gadget to help simplify our lives, and I guess potentially put our lives in danger, we should look to simplify our lives the way it used to be. Get rid of those silly iPhones, and other cell phones, get rid of guns, get rid of everything that makes this world an evil place. Maybe that would help up get our heads out of our asses!
It is just HUMAN NATURE to go out and get the latest gadget(s) remember few years ago it was a frenzy for the xbox, then the xbox 360, nintendo wii, iphone, and many other gadgets that came in between. It’s more like keeping up with the neighbours. It is sad to see the amount of money people are wasting on these gadgets that they will become tired of before you know it.
Just a hype! The iPhone overall is worth the price, but the service is just too much! I would buy the iPhone without the service any day, but if I wanted to have a phone, I’d choose the Samsung Instinct.
How could someone get angry at the iphone because they’re attached to it?
That’s like murdering someone for being famous.
i have been noticing lately hat more and more people get addicted to technology. when i am at the bus terminal i look around and everyone there has earphones on. I’m a girl and i own an ipod video nano, when i walk down the street, i stick in my head phones simply because i do;t want any creepy guys bothering me. the point is more and more people use it simply because they don’t want to be bothered by having conversation with someone else. i don’t think technology is evil but i think that it replaces alot of things. it may be convinient but i miss getting postcards from friends at camp, or a letter from grandma, i misss hanging out with the kids next door because i feel a need to play the sims. people feel its nicer to live a virtual life than live in reality because it’s easier. i know that sometimes i text something i would never say aloud because i’m too embarassed or to shy of letting others see my expression. Apple comes out with a new thing every other week i rememer when the first ipod came out everyone was crazy for it. now everyone needs to get the newest ipo because its smaller and better. i have a nokia cell i wont change it unless i have to i will only change it when it needs to be changed not when i want to change it. i wont spend 300 on a cellie thats just crazy. i ave a laptop i love it but i wont die for it. i dont know why i love it maybe it’s because it’s useful and i spent a lot of money and time to give it a personality..my personality. this age of technology is both good and bad but what can we do about as bad as i want it we cant go back to a time when it was all simple, we can only move forward. what the future holds for us is what we make of it. either it will be good or it’ll be bad.
I love the phone…I already had the first one..and this one is the best yet…cannot wait until the dev team comes out with the windows jailbreak software..plus i was the first one in line at the at&t store in my city
A few weeks ago I was in the same boat as those who queued up for the iPhone. A relative of mine had an iPhone, and I visited him daily for a few days just before the iPhone was released. I ran my finger over the tantalizing face of the phone, sighed at the beautifully colored icons, and decided I must have one. But in my saner moments I questioned myself as to why I should have this phone. I already have a reasonably good phone and an excellent mp3 player ( not an iPod Nano ). So how is my life going to be different if I possess an iPhone? Packing all my info into one device is definitely more risky than having them on two devices. Furthermore, Nokia , SE, LG and Samsung are not going to hang around and watch Apple eat into their lucrative market. They are bound to soon come up with units with more features than the iPhone, and at a cheaper price too. I’ll wait for that to happen. I am now definitely of the opinion that the iPhone is just a hype.
It is worth the hype!! But how can it be a hit, it only looks a bit different and has a few new features. Not much different from the original. Yet, that is just it. Look at the original. How it was everything you could ever want in a simple little device. A phone, full browser pages, e-mail, text, you name it, it was, and still is on there. And to top it all off, it was with touch features, the ultimate way to use a computer no less!! And the design was wonderful and it was everything to make you popular, even the fact that you paid such a price for such a phone, that is thankfully cheeper now. It will be a hit with hype for the ages to come because you cannot get any better.
Any smaller and there is no screen to look at. A flip version just means no touch screen. And a bigger screen means a bigger thing to clunk around in your pockets…. it is the perfect device that will only grow to hold more, do more, and be less as the size shirnks, as does every Apple product. That is why it is a hit with hype. It is the ultamate, and that is all there is to explain why it has such hype!
Me I it is all a big hype.I know that it’s not Apple’s brainwash plan but they hype it up so much that EVERYONE wants to get one and they make a whole lot of money but everyone hates it once the hype goes down and they do make good products but the iphone is definitely not one of them
I wonder why such people feel the need to buy these things soo early in the game.
LETS SEE HOW MANY DAYS IT TAKES BEFORE THE PRICE DROPS TO LESS THAN HALF PRICE THE CURRENT PRICE.
well………
I work for apple here in St louis. I was one if the specialists opening the doors on 3G day and let me tell u I e thing…
What I have seen and experianced is nothing short of sad. People waiting 4-6 hours just for a piece of technology.
As I said that day, sad thing is if the second coming of christ happens next week Jesus won’t get as good of a turnout.
This is the society we live in. This is were people base their worth and importance…..on a phone.
I weep for society…
“a mac specialists opinion”
Iphone is good, but people are over doing it
Well, I read the comments and I’m a bit scared now… Is this company really going to take over the world or just they the best psychologists are ever, I don’t know. But even here, in Hungary (Middle-East Europe) from where I write, have a lot of people the “Apple-fever”. They are all saying, the iPhone is the best phone ever made. To be honest I don’t see, why this phone so good is, ok, the features are nice, but in my opinion there are better phones, for example the Viewty from LG. It’s at least so beautiful as the iPhone and have many more features, 5 MP camera, 640×480 videorecording with 30 FPS, for example. I’d never buy an iPod, it’s not so good, as expensive.
Sorry for my poor English, I hope I was clear…:-)
When I wrote ionePod i mean iPhone of course, sorry
In my opinion the iPhone is a marvelous little gadget, but quite sadly I don’t think it was the fact it was an iPhone that the young girl before mentioned risked her life, but rather the fact that it was a phone, something many people (mostly young adults, myself being in that age group) rely on for most communication now days. Sadly, they seem to forget occasionally that it is the people they talk to that they have the relationship with, not the device they use to talk to them with.
But, stuff all this talk about society falling apart and Armageddon happening tomorrow… I can’t wait to get my hands on my own iPhone
I love my iPhone, I waited in line hours for it, and it is a digital extension to everyone when I am out of town, or on the road. It is my communicator, it’s what keeps me in contact with everyone I love. I see how us being humans, can get attached to something like that. Something that isnt alive, but assists us so much, and helps us keep talking to that special someone, I forge a relationship with it. I talk to my phone, just as i do my car, and you know you all do it. Whether you are calling it stupid for not starting, or saying you love it when it makes that reservation for dinner on the fly using google maps, and mapping your route from your current position with GPS ha. Keep your phone on, keep using the digital age, because really, its only going to get worse, our reliance wont decrease ha, the sky, well maybe its not the limit anymore?
I guess I will have to go online and really educate myself about iPhones, iPods, and all the other telephone-techno equipment. I am from the old school. I have a regular Virgin Mobile phone that I pay minutes to use and text. I spend about $20 a month. It’s all I need. I have a computer at home and at school where I teach. I don’t need all that music 24/7 because my day is filled with other things that maintain my full attention- like teaching students and working lesson plans, attending administrative duties, attending church services, preparing music for my praise team, shopping, you know – real life things. I don’t want emails following me around throughout the day. When I get home – I’ll check them. I don’t understand the hoopla involved. Even my students bring these items to class knowing they will be confiscated. I guess I’m just a relic from the past…..lol
HIT – I was able to look up http://www.bofads.com on mine while I was sitting in line at the amusement park. A great way to be entertained while I was stuck waiting for an hour to get on the coaster!
I’m attached to my super old ipod shuffle. Even if it’s soo outdated, and I feel a little embarassed to carry it outside, I love it so much. So i can kinda see why people are attached to their iphones…but if it’s to the point where they’ll risk their lives just to save this dumb electronic device…then they’re crossing the limit!
If, (And thats a big If) the I Phone works as advertised(And so far, their track record isn’t the best) then it should be the phone to end all phones. Do we dare to hope?
I don’t think Apple as a company is even
worth it anymore. Since the only thing
they’ve mostly done for the last ten years
is sue the DVD makers,
I don’t have one, nor do I plan on getting one. I don’t ever want to become so attached to anything in my life. It almost seems like getting hooked on drugs, and who needs that? Bah, humbugh!
I have had my iPhone for a year (or almost a year) and I have to say it’s definitely a HIT.
However, it started really going downhill with me after a few months. Things started tearing up, the phone would reset itself for no reason, and AT&T is horrible in my area.
THEN, Apple came out with the Applications program…….WOW! This new feature is absolutely amazing & is what is going to make me an iPhone customer for life. You can store real books, have satellite radio, play games, ALL FOR FREE! It’s well worth it now that they have the Application Program.
i have the itouch and i can’t live without it.
i am on verizon, so i can’t have the iphone but the itouch is the second best thing.
i can see how people would get attached to the iphone easily.
I have the old iphone 16gb and I can understand when people say that the iPhone is an amazing tool. However, I don’t believe that a phone is worth waiting hours in line to get. It’s madness! Why not wait a couple days or a week or so until the lines die down, but wait, then you won’t be one of the first to get it!
The truth is, the iPhone went on sale in Belgium while we were all sleeping so you won’t be the first to get it after all. Now I went to an apple store to check the new phone out and I was kind of dissapointed with the product. It felt cheap to me, the back being plastic and all. Perhaps that’s why the price is so much cheaper. For this reason, I believe it is all hype. Fans of the iPhone could care less if Apple made a phone made out of wood, and they would buy it anyways. People get all crazed about this phone because they want to brag to their friends that they have the best phone out there. All these long lines are hype because people now have to have the very best, and settling with anything less than the iphone is unacceptable to those people which is why they line up and wait for hours for a phone.
I don’t have one but I just want it, what I faced and experience it with my I pod touch, it’s seamless of internet browsing and multi touch screen feature, just enough to tell users that this time for apple tech. Its amazing device.
yes..! It worth more and more.
its nice on how you can charge it with any ipod-charging device.
thats really helpful when you’re at someones house and your phone is about to die
I’ve never been fond of it. My boss had one, and I’ve been less than impressed with it so far. I think apple fanboys hype this product up way too much.
So sad that our society has been reduced to a bunch of foaming-at-the-mouth, brand obsessed robots. Who cares about the iPhone? Not me. People have long placed their values in material items and this is just another step closer to the total moral degradation of our society. I have a cell phone and I can call people on it. That’s plenty. People can say they need all the extras for work, but again, this is time taken away for families etc when you should be at home enjoying your wife and kids…or if you’re single enjoying your life and not being wrapped up into some silly electronic device. I kind of get the coolness factor with the technology, but the mania is so over the top! Someone I know (embarrassingly) sent and email to every person in his address book because he lost hi cell phone and wanted everyone to email him their numbers for his new one. The catch here is that it was an iPhone that he lost and he felt the need to actually say in the email, “I lost my iPhone…” instead of “I lost my CELL phone.” Seriously. No one cares you were dumb enough to pay some exorbitant amount of money for a cell phone. Puh-lease.
*gets off soap box*
Its not the technology that’s doing this but rather humans themselves, its about knowing what is important and what is not.
Its easy to blame technology but if you look into history alot of people think that land, cows, sheeps or gold are more important than human lives. Its called being materialistic and literally being at it…You hear stories of a rich man trying to save his possesions when his mansion is burning. Its the same thing with that girl who tried to save her iPhone nearly killing herself.
Alot of people are surely not ‘in love’ with technology but can they say the same for anything else? It can be a house, a book collection, jewelry, a car or a motorcycle. We all are guilty of this love for material things at one point if not now. Its about knowing that we have to draw the line when our lives are at stake. And I don’t just mean sacrifing our lives for it but also living our lives as a family member, work, friends instead of just texting around.
I know the lure is damn powerful (heck, I’m in love with some things myself! But the life sacrificing thing is another story)but someday we will lose the most important things around us so its better to wake up.
Now will be good.
First it’s iMac, then iPod, iTunes, iPhone….
It’s all hype. People want the “iHype”. When it comes right down to it, people want the latest and greatest. The usefulness of it is less important than the social prowess one receives because of it.
The only thing its good for is buying and selling on ebay to get more money. Heard the internet conection is crappy and all it is is a cell phone that no one needs that also has the internet. It’s nothing new except a you can listen to 100 times more songs than you ever will have time to listen on a cell phone combined with the internet. IN SHORT ITS A RIP OFF AND A BIG FAT SCAM!
apple is trying to brainwash us all!!!!!
but, i still use my ipod every day. i would probably jump onto the tracks to save my old nano. which is just more proof that apple is going to get us all. save yourselves before its too late!
Yes it is hype, mouseboy!
pssh yea right like im really gone risk my butt trying to save my ipod nano
or any techonology device -.-
so what if we cherished God’s Word, the Holy Bible, the way we cherish these electronic devices? I know i am just as guilty as the next person…..but really think about it……would we jump in front of a subway to save our Bible?
~Just wondering~
I’ve already commented but I was interested to see what others had to say…and I’m a little confused. So many people (here, other websites, etc.) keep mentioning how expensive the service is, but I’ve never paid over $70 a month. From what I’ve heard from friends and relatives with smart phones, blackberries, etc., I’m paying very little.
I think that it’s not worth dying for, but they are pretty cool. I mean, they have pretty much everything that we would ever want in a phone. As long as it doesn’t take over our lives, it’s fine. Just like eating too many sweets or drinking too much. In the words of Timmy Turner from The Fairy OddParents, “Technology can help us as long as we don’t let it overwhelm us.”
Haha! I totally agree, I like the iPhone, but I’m not going to freak out over it….
hype
Those people just let it get to their heads, it’s not the phone.
The phone itself is great, it’s so helpful and useful. It only becomes poison when people make it so.
i have the iphone and its great! i love it especially now that you can buy the games and have them as applications right on the screen. i love it, but i live in VA country so a t&t has pretty spotty coverage where i am. all together tho it is an amazing gadget, and its like having a mini computer with you all the time.
I love the cell phone when I delivering pizzas years ago. Now if anybody want to talk to me would call me on cell phone. Not through house as it use to be.
I have an ipod touch same thing as I phone but without the phone and is awsome!!!! I’m typing this comment on it now! Its not worth dying ova but there will always b crazies
i dont know why there is such a fuss over those phones, i have a two year old vx-6700 (about to get the 6800) and it does MORE than the NEW 3G IPhone………plus its windows operating system is better and you can install as many 3rd party applications, games, programs, etc, for free (stream and/or save movies off the web, youtube, i can copy and paste, and it even has things like Excel, Powerpoint, and Word)
just goes to show you people will buy stuff without doing any REAL research (plus every bill i got from ATT i had to fight over “phantom charges”
That should have been cool!
=))
the vx-6700 is garbage compared to the iphone. Honestly every single phone out there is. I’ve owned seriously all of them. I’ve had two cells my whole life and I constantly change them…or i used to untill i got my first iphone the day it came out over a year ago. I would never ever ever ever ever get a different phone now.
The iPhone is just a big no reason hype. It’s not that great, and I think people are idiotic for willing to spend day and night waiting to get their hands on one. There are many other phones that will perform the same job as the iPhone and can do so much more. I don’t have anything against the iPhone, I just think whoever is willing to die for their phone is a dumbass.
First I want to start off saying I HATE macs (Dell’s better =^) ) but I LOVE the Iphone. I mess around with it all the time. I see people say that it just another phone. I think it has more to do with the streamlined interface and touchscreen that sort of draws people in.
I heard someone saying that the LG Voyager is better quality…..they need to be slapped. My gf has one and she hates it compared to the iphone. It is NO WHERE NEAR the same quality as the Iphone as far as touchscreen responsiveness, speed of the internet, the bland and boring menus and interface the voyager has compared to the Iphone…the list goes on.
Oh and about the comment on someone “jumping in front of a train to save their iphone”, I think is’nt entirely correct. As we all know STORIES CHANGE FROM PERSON, TO PERSON, TO PERSON. She might have dropped her phone on the train rail while a train was seen coming (maybe 50 or more yards away which is more than enough time to save your $300 phone.)
I honestly dont think she would have “literally jumped” in front of it while it was like 5 yards in front of her a.k.a right in her face, unless she was 100 percent sure that she would have lived….like most of us would analyze in our minds in a life or death situation.
Well just my 2 cents.
I am pretty sure u just saw a mouse
I bought one iphone and it was so good that when I used up all the memory on my first one i bought another
okay, the iPhone truly is amazing
sure their are a couple of things i would change/add
but over all its a powerhouse device
after having this, i cant imagine myself using any other confusing hard to use phone.
the iphones UI is so seemless and cohesive.
if only other phones where so easy to use
everything is laid out for you and theres no digging around to find things
the pictures load fast, its a great music player
it has everything you need at your finger tips.
and now that theres an iphone 3G its even more great
with the super fast internet.
i dont think it really needs all that hype and you need to wait in line for it
just because its still just a phone
but if thats what you want to do then its w/e.
over all i really dont have many complaints except with this new 2.0 firmware it glitches way too much
i want to throw it against the wall!
haha
i would totally recommend the iphone to anyone who wants an easy to use phone that can deliver amazing apps, and a totally original design
As a Mac user I thought I owed it to myself to at least look into getting the iPhone when my old phone was stolen. The $300 price stopped me cold. I paid $40 for my landline. All I really need a phone to do for me is call the numbers I dial and ring when someone calls me. All the other functions can be performed in other, far cheaper ways, or I just don’t need them.
I like having a cell phone because I could need it in an emergency, but in more than 10 years of having owned cell phones I have never used it for an emergency. Now, of course, it’s the only way you can get help in an emergency because pay phones don’t make enough money for businesses to keep them around. Within 2 years I saw my university campus go from dozens of pay phones on campus to none. If you couldn’t afford a cell phone you were just out of luck. The same thing is happening to the solar-collector phones on the freeways in California. Does any of us really need a cell phone badly enough to disadvantage others who cannot afford one? Do poor people have to give up better quality food so they can have emergency protection?
well, i would like to say that it’s really big NO. This is really bogus in our country and only a rare percentage has an iPhone.
only the iTouch is popular!
The iPhone is worth it. It has your mail, contacts, SMS texting, a regular phone, apps, a real web browser, 3G internet, an iPod, and more. It’s like a computer in your pocket. It’s the only thing you’ll ever need when you’re away from your computer.
to much for a price wish it was under 250
The iPhone is definitely worth it, however most people do not realize this. Being a developer I know that it’s the only device that can handle the majority of desktop applications that most people didn’t think was possible such as the Sims, Bioshock, etc.
But I believe the hype is more about the device itself. It’s different than any other phone. It’s the first phone to use all multi-touch screen save for five buttons. It is also the first phone to display the internet similar to what you would see on your computer (whilst the other phones bring you to a mobile version or try to forma the pages really badly). It’s also the most aesthetically pleasing phone to use. There’s no crowded junk (though some of those junk is useful) like the other smart phones, and the resolution is just better (all phones use icons for their menu, but the iPhone looks cleaner…maybe it’s the size? Maybe it’s the black background…maybe it’s the resolution).
Apple took the most common features tyhat people use and put them in a way where it is easy to use and makes the most sense (such as putting texting in a chat format) and just overall making all the applications look good and look like desktop applications and not a mobile application.
modpass
i personally hate it. a phone is just used to call people and text. tahts it u dont need internet u have a computer at home for that and also as for games and watching tv u have a ps2 and tv at home for that so i hate the iphone. ITS HYPE
Revolutions in modern technology?
I’d bet they’re always worth it.
Sure,
they may not be perfect.
And quite frankly,
they are over-advertised, over-priced [though the 3G isn't bad], and over-hyped.
But worth it?
Most certainly.
It’s definetely worth it. I didn’t realize that till i managed to get my hands on one. It’s truly amazing. You just gotta watch out for the plans that you will buy for your phone. Some are a big rip offs, and others make you glad that you bought the iphone. It’s the technology of the future, witness revolution.
I don’t have an iPhone, but after watching part of a promotional video on it (extremely lengthy), commercials for it, videos about how the Samsung Instinct bests it, newscasts about people’s camp-outs to wait for it, gushingly optomistic predictions about it, excitements, issues, triumphs and tribulations about this cellular device, I must say that I can see both why it may seem like the greatest thing since sliced bread AND why it may seem to be a little too much excitement over yet another overrated technological acessory in our forward-thinking generation’s lifestyle.
Personally, I look for a few things in a phone; talking capabibilites, texting, video/pictures, a camera, and maybe web browsing. Mobile IM, life TV, news feeds, stock updates, and musical capabilities are just extras. And, while extras are nice, they tend to up the price and are something that shouldn’t be expected of every phone on the market. The iPhone is more than a smart phone; it is a piece of technology that was designed with the ultimate in quality, prescision, and luxury in mind. The iPhone is great if you’ve got extra income, love to look shnazzy, and can make use of all its capabilities, but for most of us, it’s a uneeded acessory to our everyday lives.
I can see why people love the iPod, but not only is there a huge price tag to gawk at, you must you a certain wireless phone service (not so great) and it costs a ton every month if you actually want to be able to make use of those extras. This is something a lot of people don’t consider when buying smart phones; you not only pay a lot up front, but the expensive pricing is carried straight into your plan.
In general, we all lived before the iPhone came out, and we will all live on once it dies. The iPhone is impractical for most, and, despite many issues with it (I know we’ve all seen the newscasts about phones getting fried or not working) it is expensive and incorporates and obnoxious amount of power into such a small device. If that’s your thing, hell, go for it! But it isn’t right for most of us. I think the hype is deserved but the phone itself is overrated. And a note to anyone looking into the iPhone; check out other phones first.
Just like other Apple followers, i have two macs and loads of accessories such as the airport and might mouse to compliment them. as far as im concerned, they are the best things created on earth. apple has the system down. i mean come on pc users, who wants to tell the dork selling you a pc you want it and then have him wander around out back looking for it for a hour and then asking you all of these questions about what you want with it. all you do at apple is say you want it, they check you out within 3 mins, you get your stuff and leave. nobody else can do that. i know this is about the iphone but apple is the main reason. we all have or at least want and ipod. apple gets you in the store to see the ipod and just before you decide, you see a glimming object to the left. an IPHONE!!! you look at your cell phone and decide it is junk and buy the iphone. there you go.
ROFL so true, the reason i think and iphone is all that is because, well first, you have to admit it looks sooooo cool, because its touchscreen, i love cars, and an iphone is like a Ferrari with a body kit on it. It can do so many things that you dont even need, and i think that consumes my time alot, which is another reason, you can use it not only as a reference item, but more as a buddy you can rely on
In my opinion, the iPhone is such an awesome item that everyone wants because its a glimps into the future! I mean think about it, it is touch screen, it has just about everything on it, and it again looks so cool!! I think that people feel more “advanced” with this new technology in their lives.
I wish i had an iPhone. lol
i still fail to see whats so good about those iphones..
i think the iphone is great i have the old one!! i am gunna wait for the 3rd one to come out!! i love it so much though!!
i think the iphone is great i have the old one!! i am gunna wait for the 3rd one to come out!! i love it so much though!!
Our culture has now progressed to looks and if it looks good then it feels good and it makes us look good. Well, the idea is that anyway. Apple hit the jackpot on this one. People have always been suckers for good looks.
The Dell Axim X30 I bought in 2005 can do all the things that an iPhone can. It even has WiFi so I can use hotspots and it has a touchscreen. The iPhone is not innovative at all. The only thing that makes it sell is the brand strength and the “cool looks”.
I paid $249 for my Axim. Your iPhone costs $199 with an extraordinary phone bill. I beg of you to please tell me why you would spend so much on equipment that is matched by a relic from 2005.
Tell me, if there was a sleek looking car with a 3-cylinder engine rated at 90HP priced at $24,000 would you buy it? The principle is the same here.
i agree with you about the hole second brain thing lol.tho it might sound stupid to some people (none 3g iphone users). we love things that aid us in the remembering department (calculators, calenders, phone books, note pads) and things that give us access to information that usually takes a long time to retrieve without a computer or a phone. these things are usually limited to a specific location (like your computer at home, work,or library, gps in your car, i also use to have a camera and notepad in case of accident, and facts about music, videos. having to carry around a communication device that is for one purpose kind of makes us rethink the importance of that purpose. but no more, the unification of all these things has made it sort of and external tool for your brain to meet all the things that makes us human. store and develop thoughts and ideas, stay in touch with others, entertain yourself in the slow part of the day, take pictures of that moment, find your self on a map so you don’t drive around for hours. and you have a good time doing it all because apple has made these essential human needs not only user friendly but really functional and stylish. It gives you a weird sense of freedom, like the first drive on your own after getting your license. or like it’s gonna feel when we use fully electric cars. I’ve become quit attached to my iphone 3g and i think everyone should have one from the ages 18 and up. i just wish it unlocked my apartment, and started my card, it already tells me how much money i have and pays my bills, so why not right?
satisfied iphone 3g user,
i really dont care 4 the iphone…. i mean its kool but i always get distracted
to tel u the truth ppl. the new iphone. 2.0 firmware is not good at all. i hated it. what i did i downgraded it.. but yea.. i have the old iphone. which i dont regret buying..
can i join this group
I think people are saying a lot of bad things about the iphone in general that aren’t warranted. One thing is “it does so many things that i don’t need”. Well if it does, then don’t buy it. That’s a simple solution to an apparently complex problem. the iphone is a powerful tool for people on the go. You can do pretty much everything you can do from your home computer (work related) but you can do it from anywhere in the world. It syncs effortlessly with said computer so there’s less time wasted when updating your information, files, etc from your computer so now you have more time for you and whatever you see fit to do.
Also, it consolidates some gadgets that some people can’t live without. The ipod, the mobile phone, the laptop/internet. Seamlessly i might add. This may not be a big deal to someone who doesn’t own an ipod, or doesn’t spend a lot of time on the web. To those people, i say you can find a better phone for your needs than the iphone.
To blackberry users, there will never be a comparison. They like the blackberry and are always ragging on battery life and program integration. well all that is over. The iphone 3G is going to eclipse most other phones out there. Be prepared for a host of imitations and facsimiles, but none of them will have the workflow capability and power that the iPhone has. the “COOL” factor is largely due to the superior design and integration factors like the smooth, shiny surfaces, and touch screen LCD. it was the logical answer to “how can we make this easier, more energy efficient, and ergonomic?”
If you do a lot of networking, using the internet, travelling, and text/phone usage.. you should get an iphone. it will be the best purchase you’ve ever made. If you don’t do all of those things, then get the phone that is best suited to what you need.
The iPhone is cool, but not my thing. My parents both bought the newest one (we know someone that works heavily for Apple Computers). They got it for a discount price before it hit the stores. It is a very nice phone. It runs a tad bit faster than the previous one. I’ll stick to my Blackberry!
Well sure the iPhone is a big hit and such, but this is just another scheme by Apple.
Okay the offered a low price ooohhhh thats soo cool!
Not…
A lower price but a higher monthly bill!!!!
I have 4 friends that currently own the 3G Iphone and they are ABSOLOUTLEY NOT satisfied with their phone bill.
They are paying over 100 dollars per month just for Internet,Txting,Voice PLan.
Oh and the iPhones Txting Bill is $30 dollars foer 200 txt messges!!!
Talk about rip off!
Okay I admit it sometimes I just can’t help myself going to the apple store taking a look at it or playing with my friend’s iPhone. But if you think real deeply about it your gonna find that its not worth it and itsi just another money stealing trick from Apple.
The iPhone, in my opinion is a waste of money. Who really needs all that in one phone?, i understand the people who need the computer on the go, but for that you can get a blackberry. and 200 texts for $30 bucks?! come on!
To tell you the truth, I’m just completely against apple.
well i have an i phone and i love it!!!!!!! it does do a lot of stuff i don’t need but when you do need it your the only one that got it lol. like i really don’t use my dictionary and someone could ask me what this word means i would be like oh snap i got a dictionary on my phone. i love the installer cause anything you can possibly think of you can download on your phone!! and people say that there are a lot of things on this phone that people don’t use but if you don’t use it then don’t download it or take it off. And for the pricing it might be high paying for the plans but hey if you know someone that can unlock the iphones and the codes you only have to pay for a reg phone bill i only pay $45 i have t-mobile with myfaves with 1000 text messages that i only pay 5.00 for and tzones which is internet.
Hey, wake up, people.
It is all designed to separate you from your money.
The iPhone is totally not worth it.
Well to me, before I buy anything, I think about if I really need it and how long will I use it and how easily it would break and the price to fix it. I’m a money pincher since I grew up in a low-income environment.
To me an iPhone is a waste of money. They make it look cool so they can charge you more for those of you who like how it looks. I am far from materialistic. I would get a cheaper car that looks old and runs well than a brand new expensive car that runs equally as well. In this age of technology, most cell phones are the same. Tons of other touch screens now without all the bugs iPhone has. Also FYI, all the iPhones out now are still in Beta. Solid Firmware doesn’t release until September, 2008.
buy a phone depending on what you’ll use it for. plain and simple. if you are always on the go, then the iphone is cool to have all that stuff in one thing. if not, and you’re just some loser who is always home, then you can buy a camera, cell phone, and laptop for less than the iphone combined.
totally not worth it.
No device is worth (almost) getting hit by a train for!
I am all good with my Blackberry and ipod shuffle. LOL
I consider all phones intrusive. Don’t answer the landline or use the wife’s celly. Do use mp3 player. My keepsakes are pinned to my wall so I can see them every day.
I feel sorry for people again what it comes to hype, because they pay lot of money in vain like many has said. You pay for iphone, but all you get is more payments and “stupid” sticker on your forehead.
I would feel like used and stupid indeed if i´ve bought ignoritically iphone after I get it:
“wait a sec, my friend can do lot a of more useful and cool things with his phone/pda, and its older and cheaper !”
I just got it yesterday for free! It rocks! i wouldnt get it for ur first phone, its comlicated! But is still awsome. SO any way HIT
