Ask Mike: Name that Tune

Tags:

ask mike avatarHey Guys,

Back in the day, commercials were lame and annoying. And, to a large extent, they still are. But occasionally, an ad comes along with a tune so catchy that viewers can’t help but wonder who the artist is behind the music.

Lots of curious folks have turned to Yahoo! Answers for help in tracking down the songs used in commercials. A simple search on “song commercial” brings up over 28,000 results. Here are a few of the commercials that folks seem particularly interested in learning more about right now…

TamSam39 wonders if anybody knows the name of the song used in the Kia car commercial where the driver forgets which side of the car the gas tank is on. Sound familiar to anyone?

Got any idea of what song is playing during the new TigerAde commercial when Mr. Woods hits the golf ball to the moon? One responder thinks it may be “Spirit in the Sky.”

SJenn75 loves tea. Or at least she loves the song that plays during the new Nestea commercial. If only she knew the name of the singer, she’d be a very happy person.

Commercials from Old Navy are particularly popular in Yahoo! Answers. LoLa wants some help in tracking down the song from the store’s newest ad. Perhaps the store’s official site is a good place to start.

This is a bit embarrassing, but I’ve always wanted to track down the name of the song used in the old Drakkar Noir commercial where a guy is hitting a punching bag. I know, I know. I don’t wear the stuff, I just like the song. Really.

Got any commercial jingles you’d like to know more about? Leave a comment below and maybe someone can help you track down the answer.

Thanks for reading,

  37. I’m still trying to figure out why, during the late 70′, in the Detroit Metro area (on one of the *major* stations) they used to have these “non-commercials”—they sold absolutely nothing–they played 60 full seconds—in the middle of the day—and played “Rock Around The Clock”. The screen was black except for all these neon colors and a couple doing the jitterbug. I loved that commercial…I just don’t understand its purpose. Does *anyone* know?

As an adjunct, sort-of, my brain keeps wanting to know does the guy who looks a bit like a young (20-ish) Hugh Laurie in the VW commercial (the one where he goes to steal the red VW, then returns it out of a pang of conscience) is actually Hugh Laurie’s son.

All these, “What’s that pretty song?” “Who’s that guy in the commerrcial?” is getting too distracting—I can’t even remember what the commercials are FOR. Like these couple of commercials with French pop songs, great songs, but what are they for and how does the French music factor in?

It won’t be very long now
    ‘Til you’re leaving me

  57. Years ago there was a Time Magazine commericial around Christmas time and the singer sounded very much like Barry Manilow. It was so touching. I think the lyrics were:

Give them Time to count on, Time to learn, give them to live and time to dream. Say Merry Xmas, Merry Xmas, Time and Time again.

Another one that really touched my heart (I didn’t recognize the man and woman singing) was a Nestle white chocolate commericial I remember the jingle:

“Sweet dreams I can’t resist N-E-S-T-L-E-S..a dream as good as this N-E-S-T-L-E-S…creamy white, creamy white…Sweet dreams I can’t resist N-E-S-T-L-E-S. Sweet dreams I can’t resist.”

It reminds me of an episode on Married with Children when Al Bundy was trying to find a song that he heard on the radio but didn’t know the name or the singer. Hmm, Hmm, him….we’ve all been in a place at one time or other where the you would love to know that song!

Maybe off topic, but I’d like to take you to task for that comment. As a kid, I, and a lot of kids in my neighborhood, were commercial junkies. The Ajax white knight; “No matter what shape your stomach is in…”; “That’s a one spicy meatball!”; “Mother please, I’d rather do it myself”; “Mikey, He Likes It!”, and the legion of great cereal commercial characters like Tony the Tiger, Capn Crunch, Snap-Crackle-Pop, etc. It was all good.

  63. Back in the day commercials were lame?

Back in MY day we had to use our imaginations rather than have everything presented for us. We did our own thinking for ourselves.

I’d pay to have an oldies channel that ran nothing but bygone TV shows from the 50′s and 60′s and their ads.

Today’s commercial advertisements leave nothing to the imagination and images are flashed so fast I break a sweat. Not to mention how they butcher some classic rock and roll songs that I grew up listening to while making me sick of listening to them any longer.

You are entitled to your opinion, but we aren’t all 13 year olds.

  67. Artists are really getting shafted not requireing advertisers to display the artist song and available on information with every commercial like it’s a mini music video. They should all fire their label reps.

I probably would by 4 tunes a month that I hear in commercials if I only knew the artists and song title to go login and purchase.

    Idiots if you ask me.

BTW there was a Cadillac commercial out recently with the car driving through the city and images projected on every wall the car drove by. The song, in case anyone is interested is Hold On Tight by ELO but I still swear it’s Cheap Trick!

We’d all remember: My dogs better than your dog… from Kennel Ration; Hot dogs, Armor hot dogs what kind of kids eat…; MMMM,MMMMM Good… from Campbells soup; My bologna… from Oscar Meyer; You follow your nose… from Fruit Loops; Honey Combs big, yeah, yeah, yeah…; Oh I wish I were an Oscar Meyer Weiner…; A is for Apple, J is for Jacks…; Can’t get enough of super sugar crisp;
etc, etc. Seems one product always tried to outdo another! They are some of the best advertisements ever put on TV!

  79. The ads using old songs I can usually identify (the song) but when they use newer songs, I’m totally lost. This happened when iPod used Gorillaz’ Feel Good Inc.–it was such a great tune and I kept asking friends and family if they knew the song and got some really strange looks. Not sure how I figured it out–went online, maybe went to iPod (but maybe not)? Then had to buy the CD, found out the band was animated which made them even more interesting to me. iPod hasn’t had as catchy a tune in its ads since. Some ads use a portion of a tune, and if you know the song you know the next line is something that the product (or the product provider) wouldn’t like at all so it makes it rather funny. I hope the bands are getting their just royalties.

  88. There is a phone service that costs I believe 50 ˘ and you hold the phone up for 15 seconds and it can id any song for you.
Oddly enough it was also features in the new GTA IV, albeit a different fake company , and different number, same concept though. It works in a loud club, so I am positive if there was an advertisement on top with announcers it could still discern the song.
If you could find the production company of the advertisements you enjoy, you could also probably trace it back far enough and find the artist for original advertisement jingles, and then search his recent work.
Maybe they should make a page like IMDB for this, a collection of famous Advertisement/Commercial Jingle pioneers, and you can see what year and what commercial’s they have done in the past.
That’s just food for thought though.
