The Tao of Gordon Ramsay

gordon ramsayI have a confession to make. I love watching Gordon Ramsay in action, in all his foul-mouthed glory. My friends are usually horrified to learn this about me, but I’m a big fan of his. I know he’s not everyone’s cup of tea—especially if “Hell’s Kitchen” is their only reference point—but I find his pairing of food and whine irresistible.

And for all his snarling, I really do think he is trying to bring out the best in his beleaguered chefs and get them as excited about good food as he is. He does this “boot camp” style, by chipping away at their egos. Once the fledglings show true interest and diligence, Ramsay quickly transitions from drill sergeant to mentor. You see? He’s not such a bad guy—his methods are almost Zen-like. And really, he doesn’t ask them to do anything he doesn’t do himself. He just has high standards.

But I have to say, while I enjoy watching his antics on “Hell’s Kitchen” and “Kitchen Nightmares” (his restaurant makeover series), my favorite show is the kinder, gentler U.K. program, “The F Word.” He focuses more on the food itself rather than on budding chefs. In each episode, Ramsay shows how to prepare a great meal using fresh ingredients in a quick and uncomplicated way. You may never microwave another frozen brick of broccoli when you realize how easy and healthful it is to steam or sauté fresh veggies instead.

“The F Word” also follows Ramsay as he and his kids learn how to raise their own turkeys and pigs. I think it’s admirable on his part to teach his children where the food really comes from, and you’ll see a whole different side to Chef Ramsay when he (not his children) has qualms about losing his “pets” as butchering day approaches.

Chef Ramsay, your secret is out. Like a loaf of fresh sourdough bread, you’re hard and crusty on the outside and soft and squidgy on the inside. I can’t wait to see what you’re cooking up next.

What do you think of Ramsay’s teaching style? Are there other situations that require the “tough love” approach?

  1. okay, really I do not think that the chef Ramsay is “soft and squigy” on the inside, I think is a good chef with a different way of teaching people.

I think the are a lot of situations that require the tough love apporch like teaching a grown man how to swim.

also when trying to become fit, I think that that is the best because you will try your hardest to prove the teacher wrong.

I wrote too much already so goodbye, have a great day and do not DISTURB me because I do not care.

  3. I agree!

Ramsay is a vivacious character, but it’s truly him. If you can look past his brash nature, you’ll see that he is truly trying to make you and his proteges desire food in it’s best forms.

While I enjoy “The F Word”, I think I’d have to say that “Kitchen Nightmares” is the bees knees for me. To me, Ramsay is actively trying to transform cooks into chefs.

Excellent piece! I always do enjoy reading pieces about Ramsay and Ramsay-enthusiasts!

  4. I think Ramsay does what it takes to bring the flavours of the reality to those who want or pretend to be good chefs.

If Ramsay’s approach is not appropriate, too rough, what is appropriate? What would bring the same amazing results to those lost cases?

I love Ramsay’s passion and energy and the fact that he practices what he preaches.

  5. I, too, am a Gordon Ramsay fan. The F Word is so sweet! Seeing his family melts my heart..it helps that they have the tiniest little voices and British accents to boot! As long as it’s not me, the tough love approach is always exciting.

  7. I don’t like Hell’s Kitchen (I think he’s on that) but I LOVE that show where he goes in and helps people that have restaurants that suck and are about to go under. Called Kitchen Nightmares or something. That show rules.

I liked the one where he was flirting with the 80 yr old British lady and she was asking him about his…um….junk : )

  8. As a regular Hell’s Kitchen watcher, I have to agree. When I watched the show for the very first time, I thought it was a little too much. I mean the cursing and everything, and I am not a big fan of reality shows anyway. But I started liking it, and I wasn’t watching this season before. I missed like 2 episodes and caught the 3rd by chance, and then I regretted the ones I had missed. It’ll not happen again.

  9. I LOVE Hell’s Kitchen & Kitchen Nightmares!! Chef Ramsay is awesome in what he does. My favorite is when he says “You Donkey!” or yells “Wake Up!” My son & I got into HK in it’s 3rd year & are eager to see who wins this year. We also try to catch his British version of KN on the BBC channel. So what if his methods are a bit out there?! To partially quote Ramsay, “Shut it down!” if you can’t take the heat!

  10. Okay, nobody honestly cares about Gordon Ramsay. How about Yahoo! writes a blog about how they keep messing up their website, how they alsways take breathers every 10 minutes, and how we can’t ever appeal a violation?

  11. No – can’t abide ‘reality’ shows, whether it’s ‘Idols’ squalling onstage or Ramsay squalling in his kitchen. What a waste of air time.

  12. I watch Hell’s Kitchen but I am appalled at the language! I eat at many 4& 5 star restaurants and a Chef would never talk that way within ear shot of the diners or else he/she would not get many diners AND would not become a 4 or 5 star restaurant. They would be luck to receive 2 stars! You can be tough on the Chefs without being a potty mouth!

  14. I feel the same way! If I knew more about food, I would try out for the show. I think it would be soooo exciting to have Gordon yell at me. And I wouldn’t take it personally, either. He is just doing it to teach…and to have good ratings , ofcourse.

cooking ain’t easy people, especially when you have to guide other so called cooks…

  20. Great question!
His tough love approach is very entertaining, but sometimes it is not the best way to motivate people to do their best, when I work in the kitchen, shouting makes me alarmed and it makes my performance suck.It dos not push me to my very best.(as Gordon Ramsay said)

I love Gordon Ramsay! My boyfriend ate at one of his restaurants and said was the best food he ever tasted. He is a great chef, even if most people are just entertained by his tough love approach, he got 3 Michelin stars at a young age; and his corporation just keeps getting wider and wider.

Gordon Ramsay is just my favorite chef ever.

  23. He’s a perfectionist, what more can we say about him?It is his way of training his students and I think he does that in a way that he wouldn’t want them to have the experience that he has had before he became a star chef.

  24. I adore him! Bad language and all. He reminds me of those puppies that have all that excess skin around their face.
His recipes are quick and all fresh produce, thanks to him my love of cooking has been rekindled and for that I thank him. Last night I made his Scotch Pancakes with Bananas only I replaced the bananas with home poached pears and de-seeded black grapes (which I added last in place of the water) and used Czech rum. In all my 55 years I have never seen a table of guests clean their plates so thoroughly with out actually licking them. lol!

Look what they give him to work with!
Every season of HK,they give him a bunch of dopes.
If there was ever a contestant who came on and kicked butt the whole time, the show wouldn’t be as fun for the average viewer.
But these so called sous chefs and executive chefs and whatnot can’t grill a steak or a simple piece of fish.
    I’d be ranting too..

  30. Since I’ve worked in kitchens half of my life, it’s good to see A Gordon Ramsay, and Anthony Bourdain. “This life we live” Is not for the timid, it demands percision on a constant basis. It is a highly repetitive job, and you deal with some of the most guttaral(sp?) language but it all means something, because like profanity, cooking is all about inflection, and tone. Those in the biz know what I mean. But If you watch his older shows on BBC, you see what a great mentor Ramsay can be, espically to the youths in the kitchen. I would have given my left nut just to work with a chef like that when I was growing up. He gives honor to food in a way alot of other celeb. chefs haven’t. Hey Chef Ramsay, if you see this I’m ready to work! (LOL)

  32. People are so gullible. Fox never went overseas, sat in Ramsey’s restaruant and saw him slinging dishes at the workers and then got an idea. No – first an idea was born. Probably from watching a cooking show and then thinking of a cooking competition for a show – well that’s boring, let’s have the chef be real mean and scream people’s heads off. THEN they decided to cast Ramsey as the short tempered fiery cook. He’s supposed to act that way. That’s why it’s called Hell’s Kitchen. He is told to be angry and mean. He can’t just act however he wants. Fox wouldn’t allow him to be calm for one episode if he’s in a good mood that day. IT IS FAKE. He isn’t like that in real life.

  33. Chef Ramsey is amazing. I am big fan of his programs that air in the UK more so than in the States. I have prepared a number of his dishes presented on The F Word and not one has been a failure. Chef Ramsey’s food is timeless as he does not get caught up in cooking trends. He has simple rules he follows with his food and that is the it be fresh, simple, and seasonal.

Chef Ramsey is perfectionist and it can be double edged sword. On one hand he produces great food and on the other hand he creates a lot of undue stress upon himself. If you watch enough of the Kitchen Nightmares from either the UK or the States, you will notice a shift in Chef Ramsey’s style of interaction depending upon who he is working with. Those who are talented chefs and cooks are not spoken down to. But if you resist his help and suggestions then Chef Ramsey becomes combative and transforms into the screaming mad man that he is known as.

The contestants on Hell’s Kitchen are not a very talented pool of professionals. Most are not executive or head chefs and few own their own restaurant. He has every right to demand the best of them as they are put in charge of a restaurant he owns are creates menus from. Even within the scope of Hell’s Kitchen, Chef Ramsey is not not always barking orders and shouting insults like it was going out of style.

The bottom line is that Chef Ramsey is both a great chef and very entertaining. If I had to find any fault with his television programs it would be that he allows Janet Street-Porter to be on camera. She is the walking stereotype of a low class British woman as her squawking voice is very grating while she contributes little to the program as a field reporter .

  36. Yeah, then there’s the fact that he made his children kill their pets. Yes, he made his kids kill their turkeys so they could eat them. He did this to show where food came from. Sorry, they were too young for that. Sick, sick, sick. I used to love Gordon Ramsay, esp. Ramsays Kitchen Nightmares, etc., but nah….don’t like the fact he forced his kids to kill then eat their pets.

Alot of people are critisising the way he talks on the tv. He uses words to get the message across and deminish the persons egos to help them be succesful and be excited about cooking. As he said on the 60
Minutes Program- “If you dont like it change the channel” He’s not hurting anyone at the time the shows are on all the young kids are asleep and he isnt aiming at them as an audience.

Look how much i know, he is very entertaing

  45. I too am drawn to Chef Ramsey’s Hell’s Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares. But somehow I still get annoyed at the tirades, and never actually see how any chef but the one who wins a challenge benefits. It’s no wonder they screw up. Who the hell can think, no less cook, when Ramsey’s screaming, throwing things and running around like a maniac? I see the progress all around with staff, owner, and the restaurant itself with Kitchen Nightmares. Yet, I’ll be tuning in to Hell’s Kitchen tonight.

  46. I have saw interviews with Ramsey, on BBC America, a few years back, he has a brother totally on drugs so addicted that the family had to use tough love and let him go.
Ramsey has a sweet wife and kids and I think he lets all his anger out at work so he is gentle at home.

Chefs that care about how the food is stored, prepared and made are going to get angry, upset, perhaps use profanity to get a point across to their students.
After a couple of years I gave up watching all food shows it gets old watching dots of meat and a leaf of arugula with a swirl of sauce being coo-ed over by thin foodies. Give me a nice hamburger with onion rings and its all good!

  48. To Jeff: Hell’s Kitchen was actually taken from a British network called iTV (I think), and it is live and has celebrities as the chefs (very funny, I’ve seen bits and pieces of the first season). Ramsay isn’t there anymore; some other mean chef is.

But I love Ramsay; his mannerisms and ability to get ticked off at the slightest detail always makes me happy unfortunately lmao. Call it schaedenfreude if you will, but it’s fun. AT the same time, I know that he has compassion as well; just look at Season 3 with Julia and how he offered her a world-class culinary education.

It is not fake, he has been doing this for YEARS. He is a caring individual who takes pride in what he does.

And, it shows a lot more of his business sense, not just his temper and harsh language. Personally, I love swear therapy. Who knew the word “donkey” could sound so evil?

I don’t care what he’s like at home… that’s his business. But I sure get hot when he turns up the heat in the kitchen. And, his recipes rock! Sexy AND he can cook… heck yeah… I’m a fan for life.

  52. I love “The F Word”. Most cooking shows spend too much time with the chef chatting about nothing. It’s distracting. But when Ramsey is doing the “how to” segment, the camera stays on the food and there is no mindless chatter.

I have no problem with his style, it’s part of his tv image. I’m a reality show junkie, and it’s obvious that these shows are mostly scriptless fiction and light on anything real. But that’s okay, it’s just entertainment.

  53. I love watching Chef Ramsey too and VERY much look forward to Tuesday nights. I think he sometimes does carry his tirades a bit too far but sometimes the mistakes are SO stupid that how could he not? How many times have the budding chefs cooked something that could have killed someone? It’s pretty scary and I think it’s good that he tries to instill in them the desire to cook their food perfectly, the way it should be, and to have the kind of passion for cooking that he obviously has himself. I also enjoy when he shows his charming side when taking a winning team on an excursion. He can make a person almost fall in love with him in those moments. :)

We love to do our impersonations of Janice Street-Porter and watch Gordon berate John Baptise and his kitchen full of amaters. Even though he acts like a tyrant in the kitchen, he shows his human side when he cares about the pigs he raises in his backyard. We actually got on his website and invited Gordon to come to the USA and join my husband (also a chef) to visit the local restaurants. We got a very nice decline from one of his “people”! Glad to find out there are some other Gordon lovers out there too!

I have learned an incredible amount of things from Kitchen Nightmares, more on what NOT to do then anything, but also the recurring themes that keep showing up there.

Keep it simple, keep it fresh. An obvious statement in retrospect, but the importance of it is now in the forefront of my mind in everything i do with this plan.

    Thanks Gordo

  69. I like Gordon Ramsay too. (Wouldn’t marry him, but love his shows!) I’ve even been to one of the restaurants featured once when I was on vacation in England. Cool.

  71. I love the man, I don’t know why he is so sexy to me because he does have a rough exterior, but I think he is a doll. I have seen him with his kids, a totally different guy. I love his show hell’s kitchen, he is so rough with the chefs but that’s just the way he is, it kills me when he say f***k me.

  72. I’m with you! I too love Chef Ramsay! And I just can’t get enough of him! I even watch him on the BBC channel! Personally my favorite is “Kitchen Nightmare” and I just started getting into “Hells Kitchen” you’re right he’s just trying to do his job and get the chefs and people to only do and be their best! Sometimes all you need is a little tough love! ;) lol! And I think he gets great results. He’s trying to save us common folk from either getting ill (from poorly prepared food or food in poor conditions) or suffering from eatting (and paying for!) some of that slop!

I say more power to him!!!!

  73. I agree, Ramsay is irresistable! His Arrggghhh approach to teaching cracks me up. HE says what others only Want to say and wish they could!
I adore him and have had a full fledged crush on him for a while now. My husband wonders why I like such an “a$$”, but he certainly has his charms that are just unexplainable AND he CAN COOK!!!!! Geez, what a man!ha

  74. I LOVE chef Ramsey!! I am an avid follower of Hells Kitchen, Kitchen Nightmares (both the UK and US), and “the F word”. I think that he is a no non-sense kind of teacher, and that makes him that much more interesting. The authority figure that he presents himself as is confident and self assured. It is amazing to watch him. I would LOVE to go eat at one of his restaurants!!! :o )

  76. Jesse, just because someone swears and has a quick fire temper does not mean they beat up their spouses. Most abusers are extremely charming until you get to know their dark side. Obviously you know very little about abusers, but still feel the need to slander Gordon Ramsay, who you do not even know personally.

If you watch his shows on both the BBC and Fox, you’ll notice his is much more crazy and volatile on the Fox network. My guess is Fox is encourages him to amp up his temper in order to create drama, which then increases ratings.

i’m not surprised… this coming from someone associated with yahoo.

  80. We love this show and the format used not only to teach but to entertain. If you can’t stand the heat…well you know the rest, better yet if you don’t like the show don’t watch it.

  81. I hate Gordon Ramsay also, he’s a jerk to his chefs, he’s a jerk to his fans, and he’s a jerk to his profession. t’s values like his that keep our kids messed up and disrespectful. They watch his show and think, “That’s how I’m gonna act, just like him.” And when they do, they can lay a small portion of the blame on Chef Ramsay.

  82. I LOVE Chef Ramsey!!!! he’s a sweetheart! even those that watch hell’s kitchen can see that. once you get past his ranting and ravings at all the blunders and such of these novice chef’s, he’s really sweet. it’s true, he DOES become a mentor. the restaurant biz isn’t all sugar and spice and everything nice….it’s EXTREMELY hard work, if you don’t work in the biz or aren’t open minded to things other than your own little world, you wouldn’t know what it’s like.

I hear people say “just like all the other chefs thinking that the world revolves around them…” why don’t you look in the mirror? does the world revolve around them or yourself because if it DIDN’T revolve around you, you’d know a little more about different things other than the little petty stuff that surrounds you. the world is a big place, open your eyes a little and take a look….

  84. Ditto Wendy! I couldn’t have said it better myself.

I absolutely love Chef Ramsey and watch all his programs avidly both on Fox and BBCA. One of the items on my bucket list is to eat in one of his restaurants.

  87. Love him, and his ways!!!!! lets face it, would you like it if he was sitting there not giving a care if the food was the best it could be, NO! He knows his stuff and, yes, he is mean at times, but that makes for a better chef…It is called “constructive criticism”! And it works!!!!
Just a little FYI, if you go to the website of Hell’s Kitchen, you can see the behind the scenes, and it is really cool.

  89. I think Chef Ramsay is what ever Teacher of Food and Cooking should be, or for that matter any teacher of any other trade. If you are passionate about your job, you have rescept for it and want those that follow in your footsteps to do the same. I think it is admirable when he shows the chefs in Kitchen Nightmare how they are failing as chefs and business man. To know there is someone out there that advocates for us “little people” is a good thought after all. I feel his disgust when he sees and tastes the awful food he is served in some restaurants. In one program, He said to one chef who’s food he had just tasted, that was just Rot.. “you could have poisoned me”. Looking at his face of anger I felt he was worried not just for himself, but about all the other People this chef could be silently poisioning. I love how he loves cleanliness and does not take second best from any Restaurnat or Chef. You love food, you need to be cautionous, and clean, after all lives are at stake.
I love This True, Honest and Brilliant Chef and if I could meet him I would give him a Medal from the “little people”
Love you Chef Ramsay. Keep doing what you are doing.

  90. He’s awesome! I also don’t really watch reality TV shows, but never miss his!!! I agree, he’s only trying to bring out the best in his chefs and look at it this way… if you win, you deserve the awesome opportunity he is offering and if you can make it in Hell’s Kitchen, you can make it anywhere!

Also love Kitchen Nightmares, it really makes you consider what a restaurant has going on behind the scenes in regards to cleanliness before you eat out!!!

Keep up the good work Chef Ramsey!

  91. I don’t think there’s nothing wrong with Chef Ramsay. Everyone wants their food cooked and not raw. I enjoy watching Hell’s Kitchen and Gordon Ramsay’s F Word. He knows how to cook and he wants those chefs to get on the ball in Hell’s Kitchen.

  95. My biggest regret was being sick and not being able to meet Gordon Ramsay at the Toronto Eaton Center (Indigo) for his recent book signing :-( I’m his biggest fan!! I do watch Hell’s Kitchen but my favourite shows (ever) are Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares and the original Kitchen Nightmares. I really get a kick out of his frankness to the arrogant dirty chefs lol I do wonder why the Restauranteurs don’t have a clue that they should fire their chefs and have a look at what’s in their fridge. Also how bad would it have to get before they realize they’re in trouble? Gordon has a lot of patience-I would’ve walked out on most of them-arguing with him and resistant to change -pffft Things I have learned from Gordon Ramsay- 1. Never stew chicken-it will always get stringy 2. Never cook anything that has been frozen-it will taste like crap 3. Keep it simple 4.Do your prep well ahead of time 5. If you can’t make a decent omlette or cook mussels you shouldn’t be a chef 6. If you ever go into a restaurant and there are pictures of the food on the menu-leave immediately!

  97. I like Chef Ramsey….I am a cook by profession, and would love to use the F word with some of the idiot slobs I work with!!!! He has standards!!! You can have that in a 5 star restaurant or a local McDonalds!!!! Unfortunately there aren’t many people with half his standards in charge of what we eat when we go out to eat…You wouldn’t want to know what goes on in your favorite restaurant believe me when I tell you!! That is why I like him!!!! I have those standards as well, even if I don’t work in a 5 star restaurant! I want it right, or it doesn’t go out! Period!

  98. I love Gordon Ramsay! I don’t even cook, I burn things and I hate food, but love GR! My Fiance, the one who cooks loves the shows too, but we like Kitchen Nightmares, not Hell’s Kitchen. The UK version is the best, he not so 1 dimensional on that show.

  99. I love Gordon Ramsey!! Yes he’s obnoxious, makes for good television, doesn’t it? I still keep coming back! But more than that, look at the people he’s working with, and he’s asking for one of them to be the new head chef of a restaurant with his name? I’d be yelling too!! One of them has to separate from the pack and step it up if they are going to run a successful restaurant.

  102. I love the show. However, where did they get these people this year? Some of them are incompetent fools. At least with Top Chef and Project Runway, the candidates get better every season. HK’s competitors this year seem worse than last.

  105. That’s the stress of working in fine dining. He makes sure that your standards are his. I have to admit I don’t think he likes Americans as much as his fellow Brits. But, Hell’s Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares needs to give the US watchers some sort of “shock” value, otherwise nobody would watch it.

  106. I won’t allow such brutilization in my kitchen. Please understand I’ve been known to share the “F” word with myself in the cooler. Personally, Ramsay is showing it’s okay to brutilize and bully others. Just what we need in this world, more aggresstion. Too high pressure and too violent for me. Ramsay should read up on Escoffier. I’ve walked back a thrown knife as an apprentice. Gordon, watch your blood pressure, it’ll kill you. Bad TV, probably a good cook, too aggressive.
