Notice something different?

You may have noticed the “We are working on some updates” messages on the Answers homepage recently. If you take a look at the question page, you’ll see one of the new enhancements—it’s now wider. The category links remain on the right side but now there’s more room for the detailed answers you continue to amaze us with.

We look forward to unveiling future developments across all areas of Answers, including enhancements to the ask-and-answer flow and the reporting process.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on the new question page, so feel free to add comments here or on the forum.

  2. Cool, they small but neat little features. cheers for the update.

  3. I believe that making YA! wider was an unecessary adjustment to the website. Usually when people answer the questions they don’t need as much room as you are providing us with right now. In my opinion I liked the old thinner Yahoo Answers better.

  4. I would like to see a flag representing the country of the asker near their avatar and a way of determining who gives thumbs up or down.

  6. Well, I have to agree adding new updates will surely improve the site. Guess that this is the time to adapt ourselves to the new features;)

  7. I like the wider box! Now my answers (which are mostly lengthy) won’t stretch like worm-like text in the page.
Thanks for fixing the TU glitch too!
Keep up the good work :-)

  9. Now be honest…the extra room on the page is not for answers because the space is for more advertising! Not only is is distracting but it’s also very dissapointing. I appreciated the fact that Yahoo!Answers unlike many other forums kept advertising to a minimum.

  11. I really don’t like it. When you are typing a long answer, the words keep moving to the left and disappear so I can’t view what was previously written.

  12. This sucks. Especially the fat annoying add on the right whenever I am looking at questions.

  13. “Wider” looks like apcray!!! I often do other things and have 2 browser windows open, but not with the Y!A new stretched out version. I hope this is temporary. It’s definitely not an improvement. I think it’s unattractive, sloppy, sub-par web design. I guess others like it. Personally, I don’t see the point.

  14. I don’t see why you did it. Cuts 1/2 the categories off. I use AdBlocker so if you were going to dump advertising there , go ahead.
I still refuse to check Yahoo news until you trash the lame 31 second NetFlix add. Find some other palce to get your revenue.

  15. If we’re stuck with this wider version, how about moving the Home/Forum/Blog/Help links to the left so those of us who don’t like stretching out a browser window can get at them?

  18. I just asked a question as to how yahoo answers made money, since they had such low profile ads. Then an hour later, they bust out with these huge ads! That really is a shame. I enjoyed having something to do online without having to be bombarded with ads

  23. Wayy too much room! I liked the old way better because they make it seem less distracting. i believed the so-called “wider update” was very very very unnecessary and was a waste of time and was not worth it!!! It was a bad choice(in my opinion) and please change it back!

    Comment posted on April 29th, 2008 at 3:49 pm by $UPER $A$$Y
  24. The thinner layout was much better, this one is clearly just for more advertising, and now the page just looks cluttered, untidy, and things are scattered about.
Yahoo in general needs to clean up its act, as its just pushing many of its users further and further away.

  25. The New Change Is Great. I Love It :-)

Remember to move the REPORT IT button a little further away from the ANSWER THIS QUESTION button. Both buttons are too close to each other, which causes lots of errors, such as mistakenly reporting a question instead of answering it.

Once again, good job on the new changes :-)

  27. I don’t mind the wider screen, but I HATE the dang advertising! It reminds me of that horrible “GAP” ad that was running at Christmas time. I got so fed up with that &^#@$ thing that I quit coming to YA until after Chistmas. If this stupid thing stays; I might have to find a different site….

  29. I see all the new additions, that’s cool, real cool. But uh where are our avatars? I mean really, some of us take pride in making those, or finding the right picture to put in that square only to see nothing , or a blank face.

With all this new stuff going on why not implement some of the old and give our nams some meaning with out faces

  30. I don’t like the new big page. What;s the point? There was plenty of room before for all the details i wanted to put in my answers.

  31. I like it. it was time to see something new. more space gives more visibility, like the answer can ‘breath’ … and, yes, even advertising is more noticeable. Good job. Well done.

Comment posted on April 29th, 2008 at 4:21 pm by Dylan
  32. I am going to be honest but not a lot of people provide incredibly long answers. There is no real ‘need’ for this increased space. When a question receives many answers, a giant white gap appears on the right side of the screen making it look empty. Basically, in my opinion, it now looks more empty when you view a question.
I also see a few bugs, i believe their bugs. For instance, my avatar and many other avatars do not appear. If this is part of the update, I am going to say that I am sadly disappointed.

  34. Yeah, sorry Yahoo! but this really isn’t an improvement. What’s the big deal if the answer area is wider, the amount of space for an answer is still the same. Personally I liked it when it wasn’t as wide because I didn’t have to maximize my window to see the whole page.

Comment posted on April 29th, 2008 at 4:31 pm by Christine
  35. I cannot see avatars once a question is answered, cannot see who has starred and I have wasted 10 points asking about that pale green bar that shows up on the left hand side and blocks 1st & 2nd answers.and when you give a thumbs up now it refreshes the page and takes you back to the beginning yuk! and you can’t thumb up more than one at a time- very discouraging

  38. Instead of making cosmetic changes, when will you fix the things that have been broken for ages? Like resolved / deleted questions still appearing in the Vote Undecided Questions category; a spell checker that works only 25% of the time; a search feature that actually searches and finds old questions; a way to stop trolls. Should I go on?

  39. Quit changing the site so much! It’s a pain in the butt to ask and answer questions because now that the page is wider it is more difficult to navigate to the page we want. Sometimes my avatar doesn’t show up on the page (if any avatars at all). At least give us warning before you destroy the site.

And what was the deal with that 12 hour “breather” last week?

  49. Now, now, it’s not polite to say, “ignore everyone else’s comments”, all opinions are valid…

That being said, I am one of those against the change. When I first logged on, I thought something was wrong.

    I agree with Mardigras:

(“I’m not loving the new wider page so much, sorry! I think it makes it harder to navigate, especially on my laptop. It just looks like something is not quite ‘right’ with it!”)

Kinda ugly, and not very… balanced…

  50. I’d like the upgrades a lot better if the Y!A team could manage to NOT break things in the process. I now get a 404 error every time one of the ads tries to load on the right menu of the sub pages, and every time the ad tries to refresh, it counts as a “new page load” which means that if I want to use my BACK button to go from a question back up to the category, I have to hit BACK several times (depending on how many ads failed to attempt to load).

And, yes, the crashes that force you to put up the “Oops” page do slow me down, but it’s not as though I hadn’t to wait for a balky server’s techs to kickstart the server back into action. 66. It would be nice if the section listing the Questions had the same format as the Answers section. At least there would be some uniformity to how Yahoo! Answers looks. Truthfully, I don’t like the wider look. It makes each line in a long answer harder to follow through to the next line.

However, time would be better spent on adding a few formatting options; perhaps in the form of a toolbox like the one use in Yahoo! Mail. That shouldn’t be difficult to import. An equation editor that can be used in the Math and Science section would also be nice.

  69. Wider means more room for answers, which may mean fewer dumb wraparounds when we (gasp!) use big words — or include URLs. I have to admit, this was never one of my high priorities. How about making it possible to change a thumb given by accident? Or teaching your spell-checker some more words. I HATE it when it forces me to say “ignore Depp,” for example. It doesn’t even know what a muggle is!

  70. I hate the wider pages. It just looks so unbalanced. i also think you should seriously consider how posts are reported also. Many people are reported ONLY because the person doesn’t LIKE or agree with the asker, the answer, or just plain dis-likes the person. A lot of questions in elections are deleted ONLY because they gang up on people whose opinions differ from their own. Does y!A REALLY support one candidate over the other?? I mean REALLY?? I would like to know for sure.

  74. Why the huge disparity in frame and font size between the category/search windows and the Q&A window?

And, please don’t accommodate me by “inflating” the category/search windows and fonts, but rather by restoring the Q&A window to it’s previous size and fonts. Huge fonts do nothing other than waste screen real estate, which needs to be conserved.

I thought Yahoo! was “Going Green”, but this is unrecyclable waste …

  75. I hate the wide window. The worse part are the larger adds on the right side of the page. They are extremely annoying and bother me when I am reading the question. Of course the whole point of changing to the wider page was to allow for the larger adds. The longer post ”lead” the eye toward the add. Clever but irritating

Also, can you please add new categories to sports? Many people are asking for a gymnastics/cheerleading/tumbling section! I’ve written to ‘suggestions’, but it was ignored. I believe that if ‘snooker and pool’ can have a sports section to themselves, and ‘football’ can have FOUR sections, gymnastics should definitely get one, so should skateboarding and lacrosse.

  95. The new format is fine with me. Some people just can’t accept change, can they? If this is all they have to complain about, then they should consider themselves lucky!

  96. While I applaud the initiative to improve the technical aspects of Answers, I have to wonder about the why. The new wide screen is different, but I will get used to it soon enough..if I stay on Answers at all. “No new Q&A’s from your Contacts this week.” I am so tired of seeing this message EVERY time I sign in, even though I know very well my contacts have been asking questions. It seems that EVERY single time Yahoo does an UPDATE..the only real change we see is in constant malfunctions. Between the malicious reporting and Troll activity, and the seemingly constant problems coming from the ‘updates,’ perhaps it is time to find somewhere else to spend my time. I wonder how many others are thinking the same way? After all…the lack of information provided leaves a bad taste in my mouth, and I do know I’m not the only one. Maybe it might be a good idea to fix what is here first, before you ‘update’ or change anything else. But what do I know, I’m only a customer.

  97. When did this change to a ‘wider’ screen coz i crnt tell the difference!
why dont you update it so you can do more things rather than just change the look of it make it so you can add more things to the profile and such bit more like bebo or myspace but with all the questions and answers! xxx

  101. The new Y!A doesn’t even work for me now. When I click on a question, I get no pictures, no background, and no “new” layout. All I get is a column of blue blue words that are links. It looks like a webpage from 1996.

So for me, the changes basically mean I’m not going to use Y!A anymore. Thanks for the updates Yahoo, next time can you please make it so your Maps! no longer show streets?

  105. How’s about fixing the problem with report vigilantes?

These are people who may control several or even DOZENS of separate Yahoo Answers accounts. If they particularly dislike another user, they will use each account to report this user and this might cause their question or answer to be stricken, or if they’re determined enough cause a Yahoo Answers account to be “suspended”.

If you’re going to give the users the power to moderate themselves, you should invest more effort in ensuring that it can’t be abused by sufficiently OCD people with nothing better to do than sign on to each of their umpteen accounts to wage intarnet warz against someone they dislike.

Also, it would be nice if your customer service representatives didn’t ignore user requests as often as they seem to, so many requests for even a smidge of additional information about a violation or appeal go unanswered.

  107. It’s horrible, it looks amateur. I though tit was another glitch, not an improvement.
There are still no avatars, and there is still a coloured bar obscuring some questions and answers.
I really don’t like the way the site has changed, it’s not aesthetically pleasing, and to be honest I’ve had enough. You tinker around making ridiculous alterations and it causes more problems than anything else.

  108. Yahoo workers should fix the errors first. A few days ago I couldn’t even answer a question, because they didn’t even showed up and I had to refresh the page about 5 times.
    The new look is ugly.

  109. I don’t particularly care for the new look, but I wouldn’t say the look is a top priority. Yahoo! needs to fix the bugs and glitches before you worry about if your page is pretty.

  110. Great – more room for advertisements nobody is interested in ! How about working on Customer Service and maybe giving us a phone number so we don’t have to wait three days to hear back about a complaint – like when a question gets deleted for no reason, then gets reinstated with no explanation why it was deleted in the first place ?

  112. I personally hate the new look. It’s confusing when on the front page, navigation is on the left but once you click on the question everything shifts to the opposite side, formatting gets all wacky, and the whole screen gets stretched out. I thought something was wrong with the resolution of my computer at first.

    Change it back. :[

  113. I really do not Like the wider page. I actually thought something was wrong with my layout. Maybe if we had the option to change the look? However, I suppose that would cut down on ad space wouldn’t it?

I also hate the way that if we get reported, that it deletes it without reviewing it. If you are going to let people moderate, then you should do your job, and make sure they aren’t just trolls.

I really like the other changes, but I feel like no one hears anyone complaining when they are valid points.

Why don’t you leave things alone. I sat here all day yesterday, trying to figure what went wrong. I can not even see the news videoes! 116. ha! i notice none of these answers have a thumbs up or down button… is that a glitch or is it because yahoo already knew what comments would be pouring in and that everyone would ‘thumbs up’ in agreement maybe?

i must admit that i have experienced no probs (so far, touch wood) where the revamp is concerned but i can certainly agree with the rest of the comments!!

  118. The “new” look is generic. When are the existing problems going to be fixed. There are also new problems, most likely created by the “improvement”. For instance, when you give a thumbs down or report, questions are minimized. When you expand them, the questions overlap making the entire page illegible. Also, why the change to the “in voting” page. Now there is now display of an answerer’s name. This means more and more people are “signing” there names to answers so they and friends can vote for them.

  120. Yes, it’s now wider, but the right column disappears when I open my bookmarks on the left side of the screen (Firefox, WinXP, 1024×768 resolution). I can read the questions and answers, though, so that’s not a real problem. I just don’t understand why your designers didn’t make the page adapt to the browser window size. I mean the window your page is really in, not the full window, where a part of might be used for something else. Didn’t they consider that?

  125. Everyone knows that the new format truly sucks. There are even additional glitches now when reviewing your own questions.

Perhaps you yahoos should focus on what’s REALLY important in y/a: ADDING A FAQ BUTTON so we can get rid of the questions that get asked over 8,000 times. Get your priorities straight!

  126. They’re definitely working on multiple account abusers. My wife & sons accounts got deleted, as we all use the same IP address. Since my account was the first one, Yahoo felt that they were trolls and deleted their accounts after 3 months w/o explanation.

Yahoo is now a true government, using blanket policies & rules to punish the innocent for the guilty’s actions.

Please change it back!!!! People are quitting Yahoo Answers because of the reporting, abusing, etc and now I’m thinking I should quit going on here! I’ts not fair

You really need a moderator(s) to review befor pulling answers and questions that are clearly not violations.
Just because a person and his friend or another account doesn’t like it they get reported and then pulled without a review.

  131. The new layout is too wide… i seriously thought it was a bug in the site. It gives me a scrollbar when I’m using a computer at the library. The order of the answers is messed up, and the only thing this wider layout accomplished is BIGGER FATTER ADS.

I agree. Yahoo Answers has had too many “coffee breaks” and has now gained a lot of weight. Why don’t you instead fix the other problems you’ve had?

Oh and BTW, it’s ugly and buggy. The main Y!A page still uses the narrow layout.

  134. It’s obvious this “change” was made purely for more advertising. It has nothing to do with “being able to see our answers better”. I find it really annoying and would strongly appreciate it if they change it back to the way it was. It’s just too damn wide.

  135. Thank you Yahoo for making the screen bigger! I love having ads cover up my screen so I can’t read the question!

Maybe next time you should try working on some problems we’ve been talking about for a while, such as the trolls who come and report for no reason? Or maybe fix the fact that when you give a thumbs down, and enlarge it it covers up the screen, making everything impossible to read?
