First and foremost, I want to offer a heartfelt thanks to all of you who left such compassionate and thoughtful comments in response to my last blog entry about my grandfather’s death. I was really overwhelmed and comforted by your kind words, your wise ideas, and of course, your sage advice. Thank you.

Now for something completely random: I’ve been on a movie kick lately, and I’m always surprised by how much the contributions in the Answers Movies category add to my cinematic enjoyment.

For example, last weekend I was watching “When Harry Met Sally” with my roommate (who had, somehow, never seen it.) Toward the end, Billy Crystal comments on the song “Auld Lang Syne,” speculating what it could possibly be about. I’ve always wondered the same thing and immediately figured that Answers could shed some light. Fortunately, that question was expertly answered “When Vookie Met Peta.”

A few days later, I was feeling down so I pulled out one of my favorite DVDs, “Donnie Darko,” to help mollify my mood. I’ve probably watched it a dozen times, but it’s still a challenge to wrap my head around. If you haven’t seen it (and you definitely should), it concerns destiny and time travel, and a rabbit named Frank.

At one point, Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) is given a book entitled “The Philosophy of Time Travel,” which I immediately wondered about. Though I learned that the book is a work of fiction, its ideas about wormholes and time travel seem pretty plausible, as explained by anotherguy.

Of course, Answers isn’t only helpful for understanding the movies. There’s also great advice on setting up a home theater system, choosing the right TV for an avid movie watcher, and fantastic tips for making your own movies. It looks like there’s something for every cinephile.

Has Answers ever helped enhance your movie-watching experience?

  3. Was there a question? Pass the popcorn please. Oh, I see the question is about enhanced movie-watching. After reading this I’m courious about the Donnie Darko movie might take a peak at the book too. As to the question – well yes!

  5. If you liked “Donnie Darko”, you might want to try “The Fountain” with Hugh Jackman. It, too, is pretty thought-provoking, and after several viewings still has you guessing.

  6. When Harry Met Sally is one of my all time favorites. It’s hard for me to find time to sit through a movie and give it the full attention it deserves but next time I do I’ll consider Donnie Darko. So since you gave me the idea of the Donnie Darko movie, the answer to your question is yes.

  8. If you like the movie Donnie Darko, which I thought was great, then you need to read a book called Matrix Energetics and watch a series called The Elegant Universe. (If you are on netflix, you can get the series there. Really blow your mind about time travel and that sort of thing–and it’s real science.) Have fun with it!

  13. I thought I had seen “Donnie Darko”, however, I was thinking of a 70′s-era cop movie with Johnny Depp.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen this movie. Other forums have reminded me of books and prompted me to explore, not Yahoo, until now.

“The Fountain” lost my attention. I’ve tried to watch it twice. Granted, I was in bed and it was late at night, I went to sleep.

  17. Very nice. You make me want to see a movie. I like to go to the show, (2 sides), and go Inny-meanie-mineie-moe, and immediately enter. I think that is fun.

  18. Good posting. I have seen When Harry Met Sally, and I don’t really care for it, though, as my ex-wife and long-time friend quickly reminds me of when I criticize it, it’s because the part about friends becoming romantically involved, hits me too close to home. I love Meg Ryan, but my favorite for her is Joe Versus the Volcano, though I’m torn between the characters (she plays 3 in this film) Catherine and her “flibberty-gibbit” sister from LA. Not to mention the Abe Vigoda quote “maybe he ran away, didn’t wanna jump in the Big Wu” is hilarious.

  19. I loved “Donny Darko” and we just saw “Harvey” last night.
In answer to your question, I gone on YA for a movie title but not for a movie review before watching one. I usually just read the Netflix reviews since that’s where mine come from. Guess it never crossed my mind. Maybe, I’ll try it sometime.

  21. Love to provide you popcorn, a medium drink + a spring break after the devastatingly back-breaking hard work you do with that mountain-like patience, all for us. Nice to see you mention Auld Lang Syne. I loved answering some questions on that. Richard M, auntb93 and I make quite an interesting Trinity. Richard, of course, is a very wise leader. I am yet to reach Level 7. Hope, you give me, the little more time, I require earnestly!

  23. I haven’t seen Donnie Darko in years. All I know is that back then I was too young to get it so I can say right now that YES answers has helped me because after reading your blog I want to see that movie again and give it another shot. Another movie that I STILL don’t get is Mullholland Drive. I mean I get it but I don’t fully get it!! Give that one a shot too. It has Naomi Watts in it before she hit it big.

Otherwise I am a HUGE movie buff so I have seen MANY MANY MANY movies so instead of an asker I am an answerer on here.

  24. I love to talk too.. If you are looking for another mind-boggling movie, try frequency or premonition, or sliding doors.

-I love Donnie Darko too… I watched that for the first time last summer..

There is a book called “The Time Traveler’s Wife” and that is being made into a movie, so you can read the book and then wait for the movie as I am doing, or just wait for the movie to hit theaters…

I just saw the movie Shutter and that was pretty interesting, It’s about a ghost that is haunting this newly wed couple and they can’t figure out why.
Then secrets are learned about the husband and the wife figures it all out.
-The ghost/guilt is the weight on his shoulders-

  26. That is a long blog, and I didn’t get what your point was about Donny Darko. And what were you saying about Auld Lang Syne? What does it mean? And what the heck is When Vookie Met Peta? Otherwise, you do have a way with words.

  27. “Auld Lang Syne” is a poem by the Scottish poet, Robert Burns.
It’s about having had more than quite a few in the pub, and you are in the melancholy almost in the crying stage of being drunk. You know, where you suddenly love everybody and you suddenly want to call up old friends and cry on thier shoulder at 2AM.
That’s what “Auld Lang Syne” is about. It’s a “crying stage” drinking song, really.

  31. I like to read the thought provoking questions about complex movies. Some people really get into fiction. Donnie Darko was so depressing. When Harry Met Sally was so boring.

  32. No. I use “Answers” a lot, but not for advice on movies. In fact, I fear that if I ask (or look up) anything about a movie I’ve never seen, people on Answers might give TOO much information, and spoil the movie for me. The only time I deal with movies on that site, is when someone asks a question about a movie I HAVE seen (such as “What is the title…”), and I’m able to answer their question. Although I usually ANSWER questions rather than ASK, I still manage to learn a lot, because SEARCHING for the right answers to give people often takes me to places like Wikipedia, where I get distracted, and end up reading articles RELATED to what I was looking for. But like I said, it’s hardly ever about movies though. When it comes to movies, I either already KNOW the answer, or I skip the question, rather than looking it up, and I certainly never SEEK anything about movies on Yahoo! Answers… So my answer is no. Nice blog though.
