Ask Mike: Good Morning, Moon
Hey Guys,
Consider the moon. It’s nice to look at, but does it really serve a purpose? I asked the folks of Yahoo! Answers if humankind would miss “la luna” if it all of a sudden disappeared.
As it turns out, not only would people miss it, we’d be on our knees begging for it to come back ASAP. Several folks pointed out that without the mighty moon, the planet’s tides would be greatly affected. This would cause sea levels to rise and the Earth’s temperature to drop dramatically. One community member speculates that the planet would freeze up and become “Snowball Earth.”
Another responder writes that without the moon, Earth would stop rotating at an even spin, which would lead to all sorts of wild weather patterns. According to the site Damn Interesting, “without the moon, the Earth might rotate much faster, causing a more turbulent atmosphere, and thus unending gales of life-hostile, skirt-blowing winds.” You can read more about the scary yet unlikely scenario at Starry Skies.
So, apparently the moon isn’t just for show. It controls the tides, the rotation of the planet, and much more (including, I’m told, the eating schedules of werewolves).
Think the space program will ever put another person on the moon? Is there more to learn? Please leave a comment below.

It seems that you have many of the answers for yourself already. I would only say that without the moon the plate tectonics would come to a crawling stop, this would within 200 thousand years cause the earth to become uninhabitable by most life forms.
Wow, i didnt know it effected the tides….. would stars be missed as much?
did anyone mention that the moon is important to the lunar calander which is still used by Muslims to determine the dates of holidays and the passing of months?
Funny, I just read “Life as We Knew it” by Susan Pfeffer–a fictional book about what would happen if an asteroid hit the moon… The moon wasn’t knocked out of the picture, just closer to Earth, but made a good argument over what all would happen–tides would be so intense the coastlines would be swallowed up, volcanoes (even currently inactive ones) would be spewing constantly, the ash from the volcanoes would affect the entire world, making it much colder as sunlight wouldn’t be able to penetrate it….
and in some countries where electricity is rare or very low (black out continually occurring) the moon helps it to light up the area/place…thats one way to look at it…
The people of the earth would slowly go insane. The earth’s axis would flip. Sending everyone into a panic. The polar bears would migrate to the bahamas and the penguins would go to vegas.
hello,
I will miss the moon because you can see it without a microscope.
but the moon can not just disapear it is stuck with us becuase of gravity.
If the moon was not created then than it happens what the said what was going to happen then we would not exist to ask this.
from a
Person with a yahoo acount
I seriously hope that when you asked this question, you were just wanting to know if other people knew about what all the moon does for us. Anybody who didn’t realize that the moon affected our tides and weather patterns…well, they’re an idiot.
Of course we would miss the moon. How dense can people get?
Hi Mike. I don’t think that there will be too many more people put on the moon. We’ve already had several trips there, and seemingly the new “thing” today is Mars. I think there still is more to learn; that’s the case with a lot of things.
Btw, Mike, how come the first question of yours I get to answer is the one in which you don’t speak of the answerers in your blog?
If you set aside the scientific reasons we need the moon and just arbitrarily took it away, Yeas I would miss it for sure. Its pretty, it lights up the night sky, and it hold a great deal of mystery to me.
But it would only matter to us. If you took it away along with the Earth, It really wouldnt matter in the grand scheme of things
I would tremendously miss the moon, she is my goddess!!
many pagans and wiccans and the like would be very upset…
This is really cool. I haven’t read it all but it seems cool. We never actually really think about the moon unless it turns yellow or we need a light in the middle of the night. All those scientifical facts were cool too.
surfers woud miss it very badly. No more rising tides, only windswell….
If there was no moon farmers could not grow root crops.
when the tides rise /come in, the water level beneath the earth raises, and this waters the root crops during dry seasons, when it rains little. without this, farmers would have to have sprinklers going 24/7.
if there had been no moon or it had been lost at any time during the forming of earth we would never miss it as, more than likely, a totally different form of life would have evolved and it would have no basis of reference to imagine life with a moon.
Umm I bet you GUYS didn’t know this, the moon controlls our oceans, and if we didn’t have the moon our oceans would be everywhere. And if it went away nothing would be light. I bet you guys never thought about that!!
I’m not sure what purpose the moon serves us is, but my dad was killed in 2003 when my son was 10 months old. My son remembers him to an extent. But every night he has to see the moon to tell his PAP goodnight and to watch over him. So I think my son would be upset if the moon were no more.
The moon, since it doesn’t rotate, is a great hiding place for ETs to monitor Earth. They can storm out from the dark side at speeds that make them invisable, most of the time, arrive at Earth in a few, look around, pick up a babe, take her back to moon base, examine and impregnate her, place her back in bed, all in a night’s work. I wish my sex life was that easy!!
the moon is a sorce of light in the night.
I heard NASA is going to send up some unmanned stuff, real soon. Sure hope they ain’t bombs?
well, i guess the possibility of the moon ceasing to be in existence is rather far fetched to most people and just as has been witnessed by earlier comments, there are some that do not even seem to recognise the significance that our natural satellite has in the daily affairs of every single organism on the planet.
we should however expect this phenomenon to occur in the very reality of the universe, even one of a more significant degree than just the moon vacating the earth’s atmosphere, the toll on life on earth might be devastating, and an impending extinction of this system of things might just prove to be a rebirth of the earth in all it’s pristine qualities.
conditions of such stellar magnitude is held responsible for the extinction of the dinosaur age of earth, the cambrian interregnum is further proof of a time of the earth’s regeneration prior to the subsequent age that produced homo sapien man. . .
What would happen to our songs?
“When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that’s amore!”
What would we substitute?
“When Orion gets you fryin’ in the light of the night, that’s amore!”
No, no quite the same.
I vote we keep the moon.
Besides, we’d have to come up with a new word for ‘lunatics’. Too much trouble.
Just keep the moon.
The sun’s light reflects off the moon to give us some light at night, and its for signs and seasons. Also it controls the oceans tides and if there was no moon, I wouldn’t be able to transform into great ape any more.
the moon is pretty important to us, yes…..but did you ever think that it would still be able to help if it has nothing to help on earth with?
I would miss the moon very much… It is just one of those things that even though it is ‘just there’, it is still pretty to look at and wonder about.
The tides will stop because they are affected by the moon
of course. at night, without the moon, then it would be *pitch black* absolutly no light, it would be like living in a whole. we would have to use so many lights outside just to light the night like the moon did, which would increase polution. we need the moon.
well if the moon orbits away to far the earth would stop spining and if the SUN went supernova we would not know it until eight mins later when we were all dead
I absolutly love the moon
things would be very wacky if it went away
I am Roman Catholic and Genesis (first book of the Old Testament) which is also the Jewish Torah, suggests that God created the moon to serve as a light source and to seperate day from night, it also serves as a source to determine seasons and months.
14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so. 16 And God made the two great lights, the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night; he made the stars also. 17 And God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light upon the earth, 18 to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.
What a dumb question.. was it even a question?
some terrific answers to a terrificly dumb question.
Witout the moon the scary stories about werewolves and vampires would be less interesting bec it would be harder to glimpse them without the lunar light to illuminate them or their silhouettes! LOLa#of X
everything on this planet or out of this planet has a purpose. but it was interesting to know about what the moon can really do.
cmon everyone would miss it everyone has or at least once in their life point at the moon and say wow look at the moon its just meant to be here if its all oarnge like it gets sometimes everyone will always like flip out about it lol
yeah i knew that,… the moon is very needed,….. she is very beautiful, pretty to look at, valuble to have,…. lol, kinda like girls!!!
It’s not clear to me why the ocean levels would change. Certainly the tidal cycles would disappear, and without all that moment of inertia and tidal drag, the Earth’s rotational spin would certainly speed up. This would result in shorter days and shorter nights – probably noticeably shorter. If it occurred suddenly, the Earth’s orbit around the Sun could also be affected, although not by much.
On a less drastic but still painful note, it would make manned space travel to Mars and other planets much more difficult.
did anyone have anything to say about women’s ‘cycles’? many women follow the path of the moon, and so it stands to reason that there would be a possible cessation of reproduction due to the inability of women to release their eggs with their 28 & 1/2 day cycles – which is basically close to the moons cycle. lots of crabby women out there, and men who won’t know what to do, pms-ing forever…just thought men might want to think before they blow up the pretty white ball of cheese up there…
Umm Yes the Moon is very important.Every time I loook at it it reminds me of my friends because we might be in a difffernet place but we still see the same moon
Aside from being a way-station/stepping stone to the other planets, the Moon has vast amounts of Helium-3 in the surface “soil”. He-3 is very scarce on Earth, but plentiful on Luna. If we converted all of the world’s electric power generating plants to clean He-3 fusion, there’d still be enough lunar He-3 to last us at least 10,000 years.
I’ve heard that the moon is already slowly drifting away, and when the moon finally gets out of earth’s orbit, then the earth will stop spinning. and then…well you can get what happens next. the moon keeps the earth rotating around the sun in an orbit, so the earth can’t survive without it. with life on it anyway.
What I was thinking has already been mentioned — that the moon serves as a gravitational “counterweight” to control the earth’s rotation, tides, & migratory patterns of wild animals (such as deer). It also serves as a chronological “timepiece”, of sorts. It is the “lesser light” to which Biblical texts make reference, so by that bit of history, not only do we know that it has been there from the beginning of time (& isn’t the result of an asteroid collision), but it’s presence also validates the Biblical texts!
Of course we need the moon, otherwise God wouldn’t of created.
God planed everything and he made the moon to control the oceans and weather!
God made the moon for a reason!
without the moon…
the police cannot go “moonlighting”…
there will be no more “honeymoon”…
there will be no “moon cakes”…etc…
My astronomy teacher was once talking about the moon’s effect on humans.
He made a good point. What naturally occurs for humans during the same cycle of the moon’s rotation about the earth?
Anyone?…………. (None of us got it either)
The female menstrual cycle. Both that and the moon are in 28-day cycles.
So is it not ridiculous to say the moon is the cause?
Yeah, I’ve got to agree. What a stupid question. But apparently not that stupid. I didn’t realize people who so stupid to be so shocked at the impact the lack of the Moon would have on Earth. Wow. Further evidence that the American education system needs a massive overhaul.
If we did not have the moon what would the wolves howl at?
Well the moon does help to light up the earth at night because it reflects the rays of the sun…Also, its what affects high tide and low tide at the ocean. Another use of the moon is for the calendar system. Even though its not used in our everyday lives, the chinese for one use it. It dates the new years and festival dates. Another thing is notice the moon has different sized cresents at different points of the month? That also helps the counting of dates. I for one will definitely miss the moon if it were gone.
And what would the poets and lovers do ?
I can’t believe people are still falling for that joke. The moon isn’t real!
When Gotham City project the Batman logo into the sky and Batman is otherwise engaged he bends over and bares his butt in the beam of a powerful searchlight, hence the expression “mooning”.
Although it’s not yet scientifically proven, it is almost certain that partial moons are caused when Batman turns to scratch his butt, and when Robin can’t resist the temptation of Batman’s bare butt, the moon disappears altogether.
I know, this is a trick question, ain’t it? Cause, it sure as heck sounds like you’re saying something PROFOUNDLY dim-witted here, but I know better; since obviously you’re a genius for having convinced The Oracle to give you such a wonderful paying job for doing …. well, whatever it is that you actually do! … Anyway, keep up the good moonless work, and more power to YA (I mean ya).
Another interesting article, thanks Mike.
Moon is really important for animals and plants. Some animals use it like a calendar. Every creature senses the changes of moon. And this is so beautiful and mysterious… I think I don’t wanna live on an Earth what doesn’t have Moon:)
Its true, its a proven fact that the moon is slowly moving away from earth and the scientist in the future will have to work really hard to keep it from leaving. Without the moon, life wouldn’t exist.
THe moon provides a magnetic effect to the earth, and alters waves and water pattern, if the moon gets too close you will have mega waves, if it gets lost, there will be no waves and so no ocean movemant, and earth will spin out of its path, the moon is not just for fun it serves its purpose
People find life’s meaning in the moon. Each see it in the situation in which one finds himself. For a hungry man it appears as a ball of cheese; for a lover a face of her loved one; for a dreamer a thing to be reached at least in hope; for a realty dealer an unexplored virgin and vast land where he could subdivided and sell as pieces of land and lots to interested customers; and of course many more which is impossible to enumerate all. At least, it serves its purpose to many. As for me, I haven’t thought of it seriously but I’m consoled to think that many people use of it to give meaning somehow to the otherwise boring and materialistic life in this world helped by the moon. The most important thing for me about the moon is that I cannot imagine how a calendar with months can be conceived of by its inventor without the moon. From that I could see that moon somehow makes my life easier.
Frankly, I never thought about the “moon” in such an intimate way. I’ve simply never thought about it. I guess this is a perfect example of taking “gifts” for granted.
Have a wonderful day everyone.
I think you answerd the question there, But i think its there for more reasons than just keeping the earth lit. I think it might have somthing to do with keeoing plantes in cerlulation
If the moon were missing there would be no tides, and since the tides vary about 4 feet higher on the side of the earth the moon is on (just because of the pull of gravity.
When the sun and the moon are on the same side of the planet; the tides are even higher.
So the sea level would incerase about 18 inches higher than they are now.
Firthermore the moon does increase the warmth of the planet because the moon is reflected sunlight.
The Earth is kept at a 23 degree tilt by the moon, if we lost the moon, it would mean life on Earth would not be possible, the Earth would start to wobble and the seasons would be all out of wack, day and nights may last only seconds, basically the moon keeps us alive.
Were you aware that NASA plans on exploding 2 space vehicles into the poles of the moon…God I hate NASA. This was just in the news yesterday, 2/27/08
I would definitely miss the moon for sentimental reasons. no more total eclipses to watch, no more natural light source when it gets dark. However, the moon can’t significantly change the temperature. one way the moon even minutely affects the temperature on earth is because it has the same effect on our atmosphere as our oceans, and makes it bulge on some sides and lower on others. our atmosphere keeps us warm, so the temperature will be warmer and colder depending on the atmospheric “tide”. the only other way it could affect our temperature is by reflecting the sun’s heat. think of it this way: electro-magnetic radiation scatters as it travels through space; the heat that the moon can reflect from the sun just traveled 93 million miles, and scattered the whole way; the moon reflects only a fraction of the heat it gets from the sun, and the majority of the time, most of that reflected heat is reflected into space anyways; what little heat that actually reaches earth would have been scattered over the course of yet another 150,000 miles. that would be all we got from the moon, seeing as it gives off no heat of its own.
so while I agree with everything else, that part isn’t quite true.
Without the moon and the stars, we wouldn’t have “Amorè”. LOL.
To think NASA is about to hit the Moons’ South Pole with 2 research bombs . What if they knock it out of orbit, even just a little ?
I heard that there was an indigenous people somewhere (New Guinea? Africa? Polynesia?) who valued the moon more highly than the sun, because… the moon gave them light at night!
I have no idea if this is a true story, but it’s charming.
Just a small point, but the lunar eclipses, where the Earth temporaily blocks the the sunlight reaching the moon was the first clue that humans had that the Earth was round. Without the Moon, it would have taken us longer to figure out the shape of the Earth. Similarily we would not have had any solar eclipses and we would not know that the Sun was round too!
I’m kind of a sportsman, and some of the best fishing is at night. So yeah I would miss it.
if the moon left i would hang myself:
1. without the moon, we cant live cuz of the tilting stuff
2. without the moon, theres no waves, without the waves, THERES NO ME- and who could live without me? LOL
The moon especially in its fullness gives a feeling of peace,at least to me.
actually the moon is getting away from the earth at a …. rate.
Well, the moon affects the ocean waves, and it’s also believed that the moon affects certain animal behaviors such as mating and migration. But even if it didn’t, I would miss it if it were gone, I love looking up at the moon on a clear night!
If the moon weren’t here, I’d likely never get to see the ocean, because the tides would never come. It is one of my goals to see the ocean one day, as, living here in South Dakota, I’ve never seen it.
I believe that the moon’s gravity and rotation causes a “mixing” of substances on the Earth, which may have contributed to life evolving here.
That the moon affects the eatting schedules of werewolves is a myth. It is only the full moon, when illuminated by the Sun that regulates their eating habits.
The moon pulls on the human body, that is why people act so weird when there is a full moon. as in lunatic. blahhh. can you imagine if the moon pulls on the tide how much it pulls on your body water. um hum, thats right.
I don’t know what I would do if the moon was gone!
Putting aside physical reason
s, many artistic people look at the sky and are inspired by it. Even more than the sun, the moon is a source for creativity. Poets look at the moon and go “ah, poetry”, writiers look at the moon and “what if…”, so equally do painters and sculpture and any other kind of artist you can think of. The moon is a fabulous muse.
interesting. lots of inaccurcies.
well the earth, for one, would not lose its tilt, with moon loss. An object in motion wants to keep that motion. AKA even if the moon helped start that tilt its disapperence would not make it stop.
Also night and day deals with spin no tilt
Wind makes waves not the moon. the moon effects tide.
It does not, for further addition, effect currents either if someone thinks that.
It does have alot to deal with tides, and the is the biggest deal if the moon was to suddenly disappear.
If someone could post evidence of the nasa ‘bombs’ much appreciated – I can find nothing on their site.
the moon is pretty. i’d miss it if it was gone. i totally agree with Sarah–the moon is a muse. a lot of poems and songs and even entire books couldn’t have been written without Selene.
heyy!! we wouldnmt be able to live without the moon, it is the reason for the luner calender, we wouldnt have a lunar calender with out the moon, only a solar calender
The book “Life As We Knew It” by Susan Beth Pfeffer is about the moon’s orbit being changed by an asteroid. It’s an excellent YA novel and quite interesting.
Well, I think we do need the moon, and yes: it does serve a purpose. Our nights would be poorly lit as well. So yes, we do need the moon.
i would…..so much
a boy at my school died….his last name was moon….and w all miss him….i couldnt bear to lose another one
The absence of the moon would make work in hospitals, nursing homes, and other healthcare & law enforcement agencies a little more predictable. Most people in those professions will say they notice an increase in the level of activity around a full moon.
I’ve heard that ERs will adjust staffing levels (upward) during the period around a full moon. But what I don’t understand is what the “fullness” of the moon has to do with it’s effect on people. It’s the same moon, about the same distance with the same gravitational influence every night. The only difference is the quantitiy of light refleced back to earth. What is the mechanism that leads to all this lunacy? (sorry, that just slipped out)
There is no such thing as Global Warming when earth 1st began there was feast, floods and famine, as it got older God created man, then during the days of the Vikings they grew crops and corn in Greenland that is why it is called Greenland 1500 scientists went to Greenland and drilled down thousands of feet and pulled up frozen grass to prove their theory which became truth, then between the 1300-1800 their was an Ice Age in Europe which started the French Revolution, they where starving to death, the Monn and Sun has expolsions on them constantly, So everthing on earth from Tsunamies, Monsoons, to Floods ,Mudslides, to Earthquakes, Hurricanes, Tornados, Volcanos, Forest Fires if caused by lightening are all Natural Disasters, The Hubble Telescope shows us that Ice Caps are melting on Mars it has a similar atomsphere to ours but no one llives their, NASA satellittes shows that choropyll is red and water is green, so the hole in the ozone gets repaired on a daily basis otherwize we would all burn up from the UVA, UVB, UVC Rays from the sun.
No one dies from Pollution unless they drink polluted water, in China the water is Chocolate but they have been building a 31 billion dolar 3 Damns on The Yangzee River for years now by 2010 the Pollution should be illminated in China, hopefully India will follw they have more Nuclear Power Plants in China then I have ever seen in my life they use neon lights in all 29 provinces, they are capitolist everyone works without arms or legs blind, they weave baskets and hats with their teeth it is fascinating to see. We have no pollution here because our Manufactuing jobs are in China , Pakistan,India, Thialand, Brazil, etc, but the pollution in those countries is nothing, Africa has some India very little Eurpe the Sandinavian Countries , and All of South America Mexico, and Canada have none either, nor does Russia, North Korea, and South Korea more Nuclear Power Plants which emites carbon dioxide, so it is not harmful and the chorphyll thrives on polltion and smog no one dies of smog either, so we will be fine we just rotate every 100years towards the sun and awy from it we are going into a cooling period so Al Gore and his big Lie the Invetor of The Internet is brainwashing all of us! So we need to get a grip on truth from fiction.
Leave the Moon alone.i love it.i brings me peace..
Why would anyone want to get rig of it?.EVERTHING in excitence serves a purpose. The moon watches over us and bring peace and protection.
Disappear? You mean like behind a couple a clouds?
The moon effects us in ways we don’t always know. It effects the tides, and there really is truth to the full moon and lunatics: hospitals fill up, veterinary clinics too. I know because I work in an emergency clinic. Believe it or not it is important.
I would miss it if it wal gone, Besides what would happen to those romantic moonlit nights—- the world just wouldn’t be the same!
I’ve never really thought much about the moon’s purpose. This article grabbed my attention and didn’t let go until the last word had been read. I found it quite fascinating. Good job.
I’d gladly read more articles about interesting and usually unthought-about concepts.
DON”T FORGET ! Without the moon, our atmosphere would likely be LOTS more like that of Venus, and life as we know it wouldn’t be on earth at all!!!
the moon is needed just as much as the sun is. so if the moon would disappear, the whole universe would be out of balance and the sun would burn the earth and it’s inhabits up……
p.s.
you do ask or suggest, some of the most silly stuff…
Yeah, the moon is quite important. As you said it does control the tides. That is why the sea is so rough at night time, because during the day, the sun controlls them, but the sun is farher away. At night the moon is closer, so the waves are usually rougher.
I agree that yes the m00n WILL : Be missed to a high degree!.. Whatever amount of reflected light that comes from the moon/makes it to Earth.. I’ll bet is a helper to the vegitations groth also!.For if it was total darkness upon the Earth for such a time… Many other fungal growth might take place/ some halt might cause some vegetation from whatever growth that might take place under the blanket of night !?!.Furthermore I do’nt want to be thrown to the darness,atmosphereless-vastness of the non-life supporting outerspace !! …r`’R'`r…
Once the moon is gone,we are long time vanish here on earth. This will take a million ages before this thing will happen. It’s so fascinating that science can predict the earth and the entire solar system.Without moon,we got no tides and the climate will be agressive.your right with your explaination but i think it^s not a right time to bug ourselves asking this questions co’z we got Scientist who really work on it if there would be a problem on the moon.besides, human life span compare to a earthlife span is not even a tip of an iceberg, yunno what i mean……evolution takes millions to change the earth and converting one-cell bacteria into human cell?right? imagine those millions of years…………we are long time gone before your questioned had been answered. It’s just an itch to our head:-)
totally treue…. i would definitely miss the moon because qwhat are you going to look at aside from those tiny stars in the middle of romantic nights?
Other than tidal forces, there is no other geological or climatic influence of the Moon on Earth. There are issues like no more Moon to light up the night sky, no more solar eclipses, etc. but there will be no change in the geology or climate on Earth.
The moon does not affect the mixing of things as a result of gravitational pulls during full moon but as for high and low tide the mixing is evident to also cause underwater current direction flows and the bottom of the oceans show flow shifts have caused formations to topple over and be covered up. Electrons are not affected by gravity entirely dependent on their nucleas of as in space as light bearing electrons are bent by dark matter something which scientist are questioning. Dark matter defys light waves which are not absorbed and are stopping the straight line direction light should be traveling in space. Dark matter is unknown but it is thought that with dark matter which is 90% of the universe other dimensional space is possible due to leaks from this dimension. Physicists probe the fifth dimension: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13070896/
I would hate to lose the moon…just think you are not beach ____ light walk with someone special???Duh!!Moonlight..they say that for a reason, you wan tot look up at the moon glistening and fall in love not to see it destroyed..the howle purpose i think of the moon is LOVE
That is quite interesting to know, but does this only count for the moon La Luna as you stated, or does it count for our other 6 as well? the Cruithne, and the much snappier named 2000 PH(5), 2000 WN(10), 2002 AA(29), 2003 YN(107) and my favourite 2004 GU(9)?
Well it controls the tide, which is a great thing to have, so yeah it needs to stay.
Would not be fun to mess with ‘His’ creation. Everything has its’ purpose.
seriously….are you asking that for reals?
Dont you know all of the situations that are ruled by the mooon and it’s faces…..that is sixth grade science ppl.
it needs to go i hate it i want it to freeze mu ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
doesnt it come up in the morning i just needed to know it that to much to ask for
