And the winner is…?
Based on the preliminary ratings from Nielsen Media Research, the award goes to last night’s Oscar performance for the least-watched ceremony in the history of the Academy Awards. Even with the trotting out of tween fave Miley Cyrus (for those of you who wondered why in the heck she was there). After reading about the dismal ratings, I did a quick check-in with the Answers community to see what the level of interest was in
As expected, many people tuned in to see the fashion hits and misses. Another big topic was the music. Some wanted to know who the awesome 11-year-old singer was from the “Raise It Up” performance, while others were less enchanted with the song nominees altogether. Overall, it seemed too predictable with few surprises and not enough pizzazz. Considering the amount of talent gathered in one very large room, I think we were expecting a little more entertainment.
What do you think? Are we just experiencing award overload or does the Oscars show need a major makeover?

The Oscars are a waste of TV time. If we took the time, effort, and money spent on covering the Oscars in such ridiculous microscopic detail, and applied it elsewhere, we could have found a cure for cancer or other major disease.
Geeze, does it REALLY matter what so-and-so was wearing? Do we really need slow-panning close-ups?
My personal opinion is, WHO CARES! I wish actors were treated like they were in shakespears days, instead of being idolised and worshipped.
I think it’s how the Oscars are voted for. The entire system has become too political – with nominees winning who clearly are not of the highest calibre. I feel, as the Oscars remain to be so political, they lose their prestige and simply mark a level of achievement as opposed to a level of performance.
The Academy Awards show has always been rigged and seldom awards great acting. Remember “My Cousin Vinny” – awarded an Oscar for best actress? Remember Chris Rock as MC of the show? Truth is, the show is way over-rated. I’d rather watch Fox News.
I gave up on the Oscars the night Halle Berry won the Oscar for best actress. As a film student that was the biggest dissapointment I’ve had with the Oscars after a long list of dissapointments from years past. Ms. Berry is a non-actress, much less anyone with a speck of talent.
Dances With Wolves won best picture over Goodfellas, the best mafia movie ever. In fact, one can even argue it’s one of the best films of the 20th century.
So, clearly, people in Hollywood are voting with their emotions than their brains.
I’ve had it with that Vanity Crowd.
Bah! Johnny Depp should’ve won Best Lead Actor.
What’s up with all the newbie wins? I mean, I’m all for it–congratulations to them–but there WERE some amazing films out here! (At least Sweeney Todd won Best Art Direction)
I think better movies need to come out and the Oscar Voters need to decide which movies should be put into the spotlight and which should be left behind.
Award overload? How about nominating good MOVIES next time???!! .. oh wait is that possible if we dont have GOOOD MOVIES to WATCH?!!!
I mean seriously, did you see the movies they choose first off for the different catorgies? *yuckk* I promise half the people *WHO* did watch didn’t even see the films. lmao the movies this year were whack.. no country for old men? michael clayton? the golden compasssss???!?! LA VIE EN ROSE?.. ok no can we please bring it back to America. The movie industry lost MILLIONS if not BILLIONS of dollars this year.. they better had coughed up some dough to the writers, so hopefulllllyyyy they can start to write better material.
So overrated, and hell no i didnt watch.. what a disgrace and i work n live in hollywood at that…
No wonder that it has the least tunout in the history of Oscars. The problem is with the jury who think that they are on a highest intellect to percive the best in cinema. It is the idea that has changed about the selections of nominations. Till 2003 the oscars were perfect and everybody in the world used to watch it. I have been following the Oscars since 1987 and I fell the change of class in the selection of movies. Gone are those days when the oscars were giving on merits and popularity. These days if you have money and power you can have one, if you can bid the highest you can have the oscar…. or is it not? We had better movies than No country for Old men or There will be blood and for that matter better sound editings than the bourne Ultimatum. Still now there are movies produced in the class of Casablanca, Sound of Music, Driving Miss Daisy, Platoon and so on…. but the intellects cannot see them in thier mind or from peoples mind. There is group of people sitting at the top and deciding the best and they will choose from the people they like.
okay..so i thought that yesterdays oscar awards was s0o0o predictable…i mean they obviously want to promote other people who havent won before..it was the most boring academy awards ive ever watched!! and miley cyrus..didnt really make a difference i dont care for her
Watched the Oscars? Geez, they don’t get enough hero worship as it is? Hollywood doesn’t realize how out of touch it is with itself, but with the media serving as their own personal mirror-mirror-on-the-wall, how could they ever notice?
I’m sick of Hollywood’s politics. I’m sick of Hollywood’s morality. I’m sick of Hollywood’s self-importance. I’ve already voted by not going to their worthless movies. Now I vote by not watching their worthless awards show.
Hollywood has turned from a source of entertainment to a self-serving, elitist, overblown, arrogant crowd of spoiled brats with no sphere of morality, no sense of decency, and the inability to remember who they are – entertainers. They have so infused every aspect of their industry with their own political pontifications that it sickens me to see any of them.
I’m a father of two, and there are virtually no movies with a decent family theme that aren’t made unwatchably saccharine or stupid. We have nothing but a bevy of choices that range from the varying teen-sex-romp theme, to the insane murdering killer genre, to the painfully introspective crowd. We’re sick of the filth, the language, and the general garbage that Hollywood turns out.
Count me OUT.
I would say there was a total lack of buzz worthy movies and there really isn’t any major new stars (most stars in general are now over 50) anymore. Even the host was not well known.
Most people haven’t seen the Movies up for award sor won’t see them for another year or two(on DVD or cable/satellite).
It’s like all the famous people giving themselves attaboys.
They ougta have awards for garbage man or postman.
People who matter.
What an arrogance to think that just because the Oscar’s ceremony is held in USA, only american films should be rewarded. For years the best cinema has come mostly from Europe, the likes of Roman Polansky, Vittorio de Sica, Michelangelo Antonioni, Roger Vadim, Almodovar , Guy Ritchie etc has produced a invaluable set of films that test time.
How can we compare Juno against La vie en Rose?
there is not match between playing a pregnant teen versus the life of tormented-Ediit Pfiaf, there was no chalenge at all. Holywood has been relegated as just ‘entertainement’ with its car chases, explosions, and the sex and gory scenes with scarce dialogues, trylogies that only pumps my adrenaline for as long as the movie lasts. Gone are the days of glorious Holywoods great productions from the 50,60 and 70′s,
I guess that too much tecnologies and visual and special effects are taking thier toll.
“” Act, but don’t let the public catch you acting”".
Of course it was who wants to waste 4 hours of their life watching a bunch of freaking celebrities getting awards for movie’s that most likely none of us(the fans) watched. Not to mention it has no flair it’s probably the most dull award show out of every major award show. Even with john stewart as the host it just came off as pompous, but worst of all is the non-stop critiquing of what the celebs are wearing it makes me want to bang my head on the wall over and over and over again.
I think its all ‘Hollywood Vomit’ myself. The Oscar’s should only be a half-hour show. Best actor, actress, supporting actor and actress and best picture. That’s it, the rest is just junk filler.
Here’s an historical chart of Academy Awards viewership for some perspective on last night’s numbers.
http://tvbythenumbers.com/2008/02/25/nielsen-ratings-sun-feb-24-least-viewed-oscars-ever/2752
I tune in to the Oscars more out of habit than anything else. About 15 minutes into it I wonder why I’m watching. I’ve only seen one of the nominated movies and may rent a few of the top ones, but it’s not a must thing. I keep thinking they should condense it to best actor/actress, supporting actor/actress and best movie. I know all of the other people work hard at their craft, but how many people out there know what cinematography is anyhow?
People don’t watch the Oscars anymore because nobody’s seen the movies that are nominated. The only movies that every get nominated anymore are the movies released at 11:59 pm on December 31st, to make sure they’re absolutely fresh on everyone’s mind in time for the awards. I prefer to watch artsy movies on DVD at home, and most of the nominees aren’t on DVD yet. So I’m not gonna see them until after the Oscars are over.
To watch over paided actors and actresses receiving awards for what they were already paid to do. I just find offencive to the real working class people. Plus all the fee items they receive on top of that just to attend the awards is even more disgusting. The whole affair is just an ego trip for the entertainers I have no use for.As some one else stated here. Stop idolizing the idiots. They certainly could care less about the public who does.
Not interested in it because it is for THEM, not us. I agree with other people who say it is a huge waste of money. With all of the actors/actresses taking political stands and worry about poverty in any country but our own, couldn’t they spend that money for their dress or suit to go to their favorite charity? I think the press conference was enough on the other one. Again, we don’t care what they are wearing, we aren’t buying it, secondly, they nominate their own, what we think is good is not always what they think is good. So, for THEM, not us. Do they attend our company awards ceremonies? No.
Wow, lots of Oscar-haters here.
The Oscars isn’t just ego-maniacs giving awards to each other. (although it certainly includes that) Its a commemoration of the year in cinema, and a celebration of art. Overpaid or not, art is always something worth celebrating, and I think it says a lot for our culture that we put such a high priority on it.
The only reason I watch the Oscars is to see the In Memoriam section and this years sucked. They stuck in the AGENTS and there was like no respect really. There was a little smattering of applause but when some very important people like Deborah Kerr and Betty Hutton came around it was like no one even remembered who they were. My GOD Deborah Kerr has the distinction of being nominated more times for an Oscar and losing than anyone else. She was a true beauty and a damned fine actress and they all acted like she was nothing better than the sound man I’ve never heard of. True that section is usually where people go to take a whiz or smoke or drink so I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised.
Persepolis deserved the Best Animated Film catagory, not Ratatoie.
Persepolis: Amazing movie on the life of a women who goes through the Iranian Revolution and tries to come back today.
Rata.: Plauge infested rat makes food.
Who should have won?
Well your perception of ‘Art’ is garbage.. I would definitely have to beg to differ Adam..
Okay so The Academy Awards are glamarous and the stars are a sight for sore eyes. But, so what?! If you really dig deep into what the Oscars are REALLY about…it’s about rich people receiving awards that doesn’t benefit 99% of the viewers. (1% given to the ecstatic relatives and friends of award winners knowing they’ll get some money!) Really. Who cares! I haven’t heard of most of the movies nominated except for Juno and Sweeney Todd and a few others. And most of the movies aren’t even American! What the hell is “La vie en rose” ! Plus, nothing is more awkward that watching John Stewart struggling to find jokes to make us laugh (he DID have a hard time) to keep a name for himself. Another awkward moment? Katharine Heigl’s nerves taking over her presentation. I say boycott the Academy Awards! Because these celebrities don’t give a sh**t about us. Yet, they want us to watch them win gold. Next!
Jon Stewart, the host just made his opening notghing but a political statement. Obviously against McCain and Clinton and all for Obama. But…I expected that of Jon Stewart. He does more to devide this country than anybody I know.
there’s no point inwatching the oscars in this day and age. we can instantly find out who the winners are the next day or even that night by going online, or watching the news. the golden globes also give a hint as to whose going to win the oscars anyway. they should get rid of the golden globes. anyways look at the movies this year. juno was awesome but the rest were boring and recieved crappy box offices. AND LOOK AT THE WINNERS! all of them europeans. ughh. who cares about the oscars anymore.
The Oscar system is not corrupt. There are times when I question who is nominated and who wins, but you must also remember that the academy is made up of people IN THE INDUSTRY, and THEY HAVE SEEN THE FILMS THEY ARE VOTING ON. It’s required.
I was somewhat disappointed with some of the winners, but most of them were actually pretty spot on. If any of you knew anything about the film industry, the art of making cinema, or about acting, you would clearly see who deserves the awards.
Personally, I think “There Will Be Blood” should have won Best Director and Best Picture, but “No Country For Old Men” was an excellent film, and if the Academy chose it over PTA’s masterpiece, I must need to learn a bit more about this wonderful art.
Try not to assume that only you know what you’re talking about, and that your opinions are correct. I know for a fact that half of the negative comments on here have been left by people who hadn’t even seen all, if ANY, of the films nominated.
The Academy knows what they’re doing. I personally support the awards AND the ceremony. You do not know how much these dedicated artists sacrifice for their art, their passion. The actors, directors, writers, everyone involved, all the way down to the typist who writes the credits; they all sacrifice parts of themselves in order to make a vision come alive, and to entertain us, the audience. If you disagree with the pay that some filmmakers receive, then stop going to the films. To do so is hypocritical.
Congratulations to all the winners and nominees for their outstanding achievements. Here’s to the film industry that we all love.
I do not think the Oscars are a waste of time. They are a valuable applaud to cinema, which is the artform for the masses & “elite Intellect” alike. I think what we need is more great cinema! I feel that I cannot see any of these great movies, due to their violent content. I am certainly not saying that they should not be applauded, however, it seems that the movies, nowadays are either candy-coated for family viewing, or are too dark and violent for all adults to see. I would like to see drama (or comedy) that is relationship oriented, with perhaps edgy circumstance, that is well written and beautifully executed, real story telling! I am discouraged that I can’t see many of these nominated movies, because I am sensitive & do not want to be disturbed unnecessarily by them, but to each their own. I think we need more great story telling in film, that does not necessarily include the most violent, disturbing setting that a writer can think of!
I personally couldn’t care less about any awards shows. I used to watch them more and occasionally tune in for the performances, but at this point I know which actors and movies I liked and didn’t like. I don’t need someone else telling me which ones are good.
Until Hollywood stops nominating crap for Oscars and instead nominates movies that people are actually interested in…the Oscars will be crap too!
The Oscars are a sham anyways. The fact that Cate Blanchett didn’t win anything goes to show what a horrible horrible circus all of these awards have become. I refuse to watch it. And here-here to whomever said they nominate movies no one in America has ever seen. Completly agree.
nobody knows about the movies anymore or cares because nobody has the money to pay the over-inflated price of $10 to see them.
I imagine a lot of lessened viewership was because of Jon Stewart hosting. I didn’t watch them (I’ve never watched any academy awards, I don’t see the point, since you just get to find out who won on the internet), and since Jon Stewart hosted them, I honestly don’t think anyone cared. They just need to get Stephen Colbert to host them next year.
I alway wonder why somebody who has won an Oscar never thanks the SCRIPT WRITER. Without a script no movies would even excist.
I didn’t care except to watch the red carpet as I didn’t see or even hear of most of the movies this year. The movie prices are awlful but so were the movies.
There should be 1 awards show for movies and 1 for music and that is it; I think the Oscar’s and the Grammy’s covers it. I think there could be a People’s Choice but that could just be added to the categories in each of the other shows-PC for best movie, actor, actress and both supporting and for music best album, best song, best female and best male and newcomer.
I agree with David W. I used to watch the Oscars all the time but I haven’t watched them for several years now. The reason is that I have just become fed up with the violence, immorality, and language in the movies. I am also fed up with the immorality and bad behavior exhibited by the people working in the movie industry.
I am also fed up with the actors who think that because they have acquired some recognition that they have the right to badmouth everything about this country that has allowed them to acquire their fame and wealth. The fact that some of them fawn over America hating foreign dictators is simply beyond contempt.
If and when they go back to good writing, good story telling, and good acting as the basis for the movies they produce I will actually get out my wallet and return to the theaters. But as long as they continue using boobs and blood to draw people to their movies I will continue staying away from them and their self serving awards ceremonies.
actually i like the Oscars, althought it was kind of dissappointing and boring, but its still fun and i love how the stars look..very glamorous and healthy, its cool if someone takes care of himself
I do wish I could be star for the day at the Oscars because all celebs are given tons of freebies…I saw a story and the PR people were organizing the gifts, there were laptops, Chanel bags, diamond rings, designer perfumes and more…as if they dont already have enough money they get all this stuff for free oh and lets not forget the designer dress and jewels to wear GRRRRRRRRRRRRR
I was glad most of the women dressed pretty appropriately; not like sluts, as in the past. I felt so sorry for Jennifer Garner when Gary Busey put his hands on her. Too bad Ben wasn’t there… She was a lady and very diplomatic about it.. I still felt sorry for her. I missed seeing dancing numbers at the Oscars, as in the past. Actor Brad Renfro shouldn’t have been ignored. I think we can do with out non acting Oscars being presented ( sound, editing, etc.). I am still mad that “Tootsie” didn’t win for Best Movie and Dustin Hoffman didn’t win for Best Actor.. The show was too long, too..
The oscars were a big flop, honestly who cares whose wearing what? half those dresses arent worth the fabric they were made frm, the oscars is just an over rated big prom performance and i think that was the whole jist of it, the academy thought ppl would be interested just becuz the strike was over…well look whose the loser now!
I didn’t watch it because it just seemed like it was going to be boring. When the big selling point for the show was – “the writer’s are back!” I knew that this show was going to tank.
Maybe, and just maybe, europeans were awarded this year because there simply weren’t any american movies or actors worth the ticket you pay, and I don’t mean it in an offensive way! It’s just a call to step up, we need meaty cinema, movies with emotion other than just a plain hook, like a cool attitude (Juno) where you can see that the kid isn’t really acting! She’s being herself in the big screen and in life, so that gets you an Oscar?
Stop making SO much comercial junk! It’s nice to see it once in a while but it’s the sames stories over and over again! When was the last time you saw a movie and the end blew you away or was totally the opposite of what you expected? An utter out of the blue surprise… I bet it wasn’t the past year. Where are the La Vita e Bella days, when a subject so discussed made everyone cry because of a beautiful and new take. It’s underestimating the audience. They are feeding us trash and we just keep coming back. We know the ending of it all sitting through the first 15 minutes, why bother see the rest?
So i think that if you don’t find it at home, well, Europe or any other continent steping out to the plate with compelling acting, it’s good enough to be awarded.
I actually watched the Academy Awards, mainly because I was bored that night.
It wasn’t too bad; I do like Jon Stewart, and I thought he was a good host (again).
I really dont know why Miley Cyrus was there; I mean, I know she’s famous with the kiddies n all, but she isn’t a movie actress, let alone a good TV actress.
I dont know why there are so many people here hating on the Oscars. The Oscars has been around for 80 years, so I dont know why you’d call the actors today so egotistical as opposed to the last 80 years. All they’re doing is celebrating another year of movie-making.
As for the nominations and winners, I was a bit shocked that Juno didn’t win best picture, although No Country for Old Men was a great movie as well. I thought all 5 of the nominations for best leading actor were undeserving. I love movies and watch many of them, but I hadn’t heard of There Will Be Blood or In the Valley of Elah before the Oscars. La Vie en rose is another movie I hadn’t heard of, and was shocked to see Marion Cottilard win the best leading actress award over Julie Christie, Cate Blanchett, Ellen Page, and even Laura Linney. I didn’t really have a problem with the other categories – I think the other winners were deserving.
I think the main problem with the Academy Awards, especially this year, was that many of the nominations weren’t popular in North America, especially to the average household. Even movies like Michael Clayton; I had heard about it and plan on watching it soon, but I had no idea that the movie was considered such a great movie, let alone a nominee for Picture of the Year. Plus, I dont think the Academy Awards were advertised that much this year, as I didn’t even know it was coming on until the day before – but I live in Canada, so maybe I didn’t see all the commercials Americans saw.
Who cares? Who are these Academy folks anyway? Why should I, or anyone else, care what they think about the state of movies? It’s just an excuse for a bunch of entertainers to believe they’re doing something *important* for the history of our culture. I didn’t watch, won’t ever watch, and really don’t care. The movies I like and the movies I think are culturally important never show up anyway. What I find worthy of ridicule to the extreme is the fact that Yahoo and other news people thought “So and so won an Oscar for…” was “Breaking News.” That’s not news. That’s pandering to faux-American royalty. What’s news is that the cost of one goodie bag those faux-royalty picked up for prancing around in clothing that could feed a family of four for six months could also put a disadvantaged kid through college. They want to know why people don’t care? Don’t watch? I think it’s mostly because the movies they “honor” are ones no one cares about. They want to know why I don’t care? Because they’re stupid. The Academy needs to get over themselves. Do what Trump’s Miss America is doing. Turn it into a reality show with catfighting. People will tune in.
The show was obviously planned with the writers’ strike in mind,(hence, all the heavy look-backs & retros), then little was done to improve it when the strike was broken before the ceremonies.
Hollywood is America’s royalty. Ya’ll are sounding like the branch of Brits who want to do away with their real royalty…failing to recognize its symbolic worth to its own history as a nation and true value when it comes to drawing tourists’ money.
There really are a lot of movie haters here for some reason, but they were some excellent movies this year and the actual award portion of the show was good. Also, Jon Stewart did a fine job of hosting and they ended 15 minutes early–which never happens. First of all, many of us do go to movies. I saw all the nominated films. “Michael Clayton” was excellent. It had both good character development and a riveting story that was not resolved until the end of the film. La Vie en Rose, Juno and “No Country…” were also very good. Although I didn’t care for “There Will Be Blood” that doesn’t make it a bad film. I only pay $6.50 for a film in the theatre, so prices obviously vary around the U.S. Of course, “E’s” coverage of the red carpet, which started a noon our time is ridiculous. I didn’t think “No Country…” is the best Coen brothers film, but it was true to the book and a good movie. The notion that no one cares or knows about movies is just not true. Good films get good attendance and some carry both educational and entertainment value. And, yes, films are an art form.
i agree why the hell was she there
she wasnt nominated for anything and i think that she looked horrible
Not to mention that michael clayton lady who looks like a freaking animal couldve worn some make up and that dress looked like a garbage bag!!!
Total waste of time
the awards are just another reason to take rich people, put them all in 1 room and make them think they are even better then they already think they are. its a waist of life and tv.
as stated above me no one has the money or time to go to $10 movies!
I have not appreciated the Ocars much in a while. Most of the movies that are nominated, I have never even heard of! It’s all about Hollywood. Personally, I love the Academy Awards from the old days – Carole Lombarde, Betty Davis, Olivia DeHavilland, etc. That was true Hollywood in my opinion. Most of the new breeders are flashes in the pan. I didn’t watch it and don’t care to anymore. I’d rather watch Lifetime.
Every year they get duller and duller. On some level I expect to see more performance from the artists. I’d rather see more people on stage than the awards being given. Performance, performance, performance. a few awards really quick and more performance etc.
A funny thing happened when I got a life of my own many years ago. The Hollywood hype that is the Academy Awards was no longer interesting.
I only watch the last half hour to see the memorial tribute. Most of the movies are horrible. The songs were terrible and the one that won was just insipid and boring.
I agree with Paula Hunter, old Hollywood is the best… much more classy and respectful. Think Audrey Hepburn, Gregory Peck, Jimmy Stewart and the like. Now it’s just self-absorbed people constantly patting themselves on the back.
But…I completely disagree with “em nears” that said “Hollywood is our (America’s) royalty”. lol No…no they are not. Sorry.
.
I have to say to “David W” Is that a petition…Where do I sign?
The reason I believe that people don’t care anymore is because Hollywood injects a lot of political overtones that people are trying to get away from. Hollywood is arrogant and feels they can put out movies to shape people’s convictions on Iraq, oil, etc. A movie is a way to escape all these things and what does Hollywood do? Ram it down your throat. Then they nominate crap and people would have to guess on what the judges lean toward. It should be unbiased, but we all know it isn’t. I agree with Ellen.
They should have America vote the way they do for American Idol and the way they did Miss America this year. Make it more interesting and more relevant. The people who were voting apparently had very different taste in movies than mainstream America.
However, it could also be that with so many “have not’s” in this country, it is pretty annoying to turn on our TV and watch the pretty people with all the money talking about their dress that could feed a small country.
1) I think there are too many award shows
2) They are really boring
3) I have better things to do.
The Academy Awards is an award show that is televised. It’s not a television show. It never has and hopefully never will exist for ratings.
Last time I checked, celebrities didn’t care about us…that was reflected in the show this year.
I DVR’d it while watching my other shows, and didn’t even watch it – deleted it because I caught the tail end. It’s become too much about the outfits and the drama… Too much wasted time.
The Golden Globes were the best! Announce, congratulate, move on.
yeah they pretty much sucked my left!
I think that the lack of entertainment was due to the fact that they only decided a few weeks ago that the show would even be happening due to the writer’s strike, although i don’t know why they took that into account, they don’t recognize the writers that much anyways…i didn’t watch it. and i’m glad, especially if that stupid miley cyrus was there. she needs to act her age, and get some good dental work.
christine
I wathch the oscars every year, and enjoy it. but this year, I was not impressed. the oscars, I quickly lost intrest, and I was very disappointed. First off, John Stewart was not a good host at all, they should have gotten somebody else; he put me to sleep and did alot of unesscearry talking. Also the montages were not original, they showed montages of past oscar shows. could this be due to the writers strike? The best part was the performance of the song Raise up, which I enjoyed. But overall, the show was boring and very corny. John Stewart….don’t quit your day job……..
You spelled unesscessary wrong lol
I can’t even remember the last oscars I watched. The movies that win suck most of the time. I prefer the emmy’s. The grammy’s is a load of shite as well.
It is sad to see how everything that goes wrong gets blamend on the writters strike, is there nobody original out there anymore. The Oscar’s sucked. In one word. The MC if you can call him that was so boreing even George Clooney was falling asleep in the front row.
I happened to love this year’s Oscars. I am a huge fan of film and I thought the night was filled with excitement and a lot of fashion (RED! RED! RED! RED!…i mean…wasn’t Katherine Heigl just stunning?) I did not expect Marion Cotillard to win for Best Actress….and I am really happy for her. I really enjoyed this year’s Academy Awards!
I knew this will happen, i predicted it in mid-2007. Miley Cyrus appeared in the Oscars for the first time ever. She’s not 18 yet and too young to be nominated for the Best Actress or Best Supporting Actress but fans like to. About Hannah Montana’s movie and High School Musical 3 to nominated to the Oscars?
I usually see the glass overflowing and look for the positive in everything. However, this year the Oscars were terrible. The host was horrific. Jon Stewart should never have been the host. They should have gotten someone like Ellen DeGeneres.
The only part I liked was when the songs were being sung, especially the songs from “Enchanted”. The songs from “Enchanted” was staged like a Broadway show. The reason I think it was staged as if it is on Broadway is because I have a feeling it will be made into a Broadway show and I hope so.
Now getting back to the Oscars. To sum it up in two words “It sucked”
shes a freakin hotty
I don’t have a T.V. and so didn’t watch it.
It kinda sucked, but I noticed that Jon Stewart didn’t say too much. My opinion is that with the writer’s strike, they had virtually no time to make a good script.
I loved the Oscars!
Now, I will agree that there were some things that I could have done without (like the host for one), but all-in-all, it wasn’t a total miss.
One thing that bugs me most is that all the movies that get nominated for best picture, I NEVER get to see them! This year, I did get to see Juno, but I knew that wasn’t going to win for best picture, so I just had to go with my instincts and say that No Country for Old Men deserved everything they got. =)
Now, I think that next year, they have Billy Crystal come back as host, or even Ellen. Those 2 should interchange every year!
The Oscars weren’t as big of a dissapointment as I thought- John Stewart was a really funny host and I was chuckling at all his jokes. He made it a light evening, tried to take off some of the pressure on the stars.
I found it kind of went on and on.. it could and should be made shorter. Lots of people don’t care who wins the best graphics team is. Yes, they contribute a lot, but in the long run the fans just don’t care that much.
I think we are WAY in celebrity overload, I mean, when I get up in the morning to get ready for work and grab my cup of coffee, and FoxNews and CNN are both having breaking news about Britney Spears’ nervous breakdown, while at the same time, we’re a country at war and its an election year, I mean, COME ON!!! Give it a break…. I think the low ratings are a sign that we can instantly hear of the winners online (if we so choose) and yet, are SOOOO not interested because of the celebrity overload. Let up already!
I only watched for James McAvoy, Anne Hathaway, and Steve Carrell because I saw them live during Wondercon 2008 in San Francisco. Otherwise, it was a pretty bland program though Jon Stewart had some pretty good moments. I’m still disappointed that James McAvoy was nominated…next year maybe.
with the short time after the end of the writers’ strike they did not have the time for the usual hype. usually the film companies contribute a lot to the hype as well and people did not want to spend the money and energy to build it up when they did not know if it would happen.
The show was not bad at all.
Who really cares about celebs congratulating themselves?
People are tired of the self-important attitude that much of Hollywood embraces – and the really crappy product that they have been putting out lately.
I’m usually a big fan of the Oscars but I didn’t feel like watching it this year. First off, I didn’t know any of the nominees except for best actor — Depp, Clooney and Daniel Day Lewis. However, the race for that particular category has long been decided. It’s not like Depp will finally get one. That would’ve been a stunner. Even Clooney would’ve been a pleasant surprise. But Daniel Day Lewis … ho-hum.
Second, I don’t think Jon Stewart can carry such a big show. He’s great behind his little desk at the Daily Show but not on a big stage. They should’ve given the gig to a more accomplished entertainer the likes of Billy Crystal, Nathan Lane or even Ellen Degeneres. I get it that they’re trying to be ‘smart’ about it that’s why they put Stewart on … but is Hollywood really about the smarts? It’s a dog and pony show not a discussion among the erudite. What that show needed was a ring-leader not a lecturing professor.
They let the former stripper win an Oscar … now that’s what Hollywood is all about!
Jon Stewart is a weak emcee. He is trying to be too trendy and cute. The name of the show is glamour and glitz. After all, it’s tinsel town. I don’t think they should cut off winners when they are speaking. The show had a few moments but was not the quality of prior years.
I enjoyed the show. Since Fox was showing cars going in circles, I decided to see why Jon Stewart took a week off The Daily Show, and found his humor typically delightful.
Jon sucked. Nuff said.
The Oscars would have been far much more better if they at least stopped putting that damn music 10 seconds after almost everyone’s thank-you speech (I hate ridiculously long speeches where the winner thanks the dog of the producers cousin, but they didn’t even let several winners say anything) whereas Jon is making very old jokes about Jack Nicholson getting women pregnant. That joke is not only bad, but old too.
Perhaps if the Oscars started giving awards to good horror and sci-fi cinema more often people would get more interested in watching them. Plus, the fact that even Hayao Miyazaki’s excellent movies have a hard time getting any recognition (and apparently there’s been some very good japanese anime movies this year) shows why the Oscars are full of lose.
Also, great movies aren’t only in english. I’m happy that at least 1 actress got an award for a non english role for once at least.
I have to disagree with most people, I thought this may have been better than some of the more recent years. I LOVED Jon Stewart as the host.
It was great when they let the woman who won for best song come back, she really gave a great speech.
the only thing I had a problem with was all the foreign film nominations and wins. It is in Hollywood, keep to the one category for foreign films make them ineligible for Best Picture, acting awards ect.
I cared about watching the Oscars so much I didn’t even know they already aired.
The ‘Acadmey’s’ nominated movies aren’t very high quality mostly about most boringly controversial, the ‘stars’ are all cookie cutter imprints of each other vain and self serving. The songs are forgettable. Except for few rare exceptions the magic has been gone for at least 30 years.
Of course nobody is watching the show the one’s that did, our grandparents, aren’t around anymore.
I could never figure out why the Oscar for Best Director and the Oscar for Best Film are not one in the same award. Isn’t motion pictures a Director’s medium and how could there be a best picture from another Director making that other movie?
As they say, “That’s Hollywood”…
Wow, lots of Oscar-haters here.
The Oscars isn’t just ego-maniacs giving awards to each other. (although it certainly includes that) Its a commemoration of the year in cinema, and a celebration of art. Overpaid or not, art is always something worth celebrating, and I think it says a lot for our culture that we put such a high priority on it.

thanks for all you do to help us all bye bye
Maybe people are just tired of seeing rich people while everyone is struggling to exist and find money for food…. Naw… I figure it is just that they are tired of sitting through endless streams of “who cares” awards and the speeches they give while waiting for the big awards.
The other thing is that the awards do not seem to truly reflect what the viewing audience feels are the winners.
It may be a good isea to open up a call-in so that viewers can get their input. Although an award from their peers is important, it is the viewers that keep them in the money.
In the grand scheme of things, it serves no purpose. Who should realy care!
